The story begins with an elderly widow from Ottawa County, Michigan, who received a terrifying phone call. A scammer, whom the woman noted had a "very good voice," convinced her that her Social Security number was being used to fund terrorism, drug activity, and money laundering.

The caller instructed the frightened woman to purchase $700,000 in gold, claiming it would help law enforcement track the criminals. Convinced she was doing the right thing, the woman searched online for a gold dealer and drove 40 miles to Grand Rapids Coins.

The Intervention

When she arrived at the shop, she met the owner, Ben Soldaat. While the woman was ready to wire the massive sum of money, Soldaat immediately noticed several alarming red flags:

  • Unusual Behavior: The woman claimed she was buying the gold as an investment for her children.
Lack of Interest: Despite the massive purchase, she showed minimal interest in the actual product.
  • Anxiety: She displayed confusion and asked the same questions repeatedly.
  • Rushed Timeline: After wiring the $700,000, she became highly urgent and antsy when told it would take three to five days to get the gold on site.

Trusting his instincts, Soldaat realized someone was pushing her in a direction she did not want to go. He decided to play it safe and contacted the Kent County Sheriff's Office to protect her life savings.

The Sweet Taste of Justice

Detectives quickly intervened, visiting the woman at her home while she was still receiving aggressive calls from the scammers. Realizing the scammers were sending a courier to pick up the gold, law enforcement set up a brilliant sting operation.

An undercover detective dressed up as an older woman to make the handoff. When the 20-year-old courier arrived to collect the $700,000 prize, the undercover agent handed over a package from Soldaat's shop.

Instead of walking away with a fortune, the accused scammer ended up with a bag of chocolate gold coins and a pair of 20-year felonies.

A Happy Ending

Thanks to the quick thinking of a local business owner and the swift action of law enforcement, the widow did not lose her money. She later called Soldaat to thank him for his life-saving intervention.

Though shaken by how easily she was fooled, the woman bravely shared her experience to serve as a cautionary tale. Her hope is that her story will help protect others from becoming victims of these devastating scams.
