A new Economist/YouGov survey found a sharp partisan divide in how Americans view the United States ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, with Republicans far more likely than Democrats to describe the country as the “greatest” in the world.
The survey, conducted June 19-22, 2026, among 1,679 respondents, asked Americans how they would compare the United States with other countries.

Overall, 25% of respondents said America is “the greatest” country. Another 20% said it is “among the greatest,” while 12% described it as “better than average.”
Smaller shares gave more negative responses. Twelve percent said the United States is “worse than average,” 9% said it is “among the worst,” and 4% said it is “the worst.”
The results differed significantly by party.
Among Republicans, 52% said America is the “greatest” country, while 28% said it is “among the greatest.” By contrast, 8% of Democrats said the United States is the “greatest” country, while 16% said it is “among the greatest.”
A plurality of Democrats, 23%, said America is “worse than average” compared with other countries. Another 15% said it is “among the worst,” and 4% said it is “the worst.”
Thirteen percent of Democrats described the United States as “about average,” while another 13% called it “better than average.”
The survey also found ideological differences. Among self-described liberals, 26% said America is “worse than average.” Among conservatives, 53% said the United States is the “greatest” country.
Responses also differed by 2024 presidential vote. Among voters who supported Kamala Harris, nearly one-quarter said America is “worse than average,” while 18% said it is “among the worst.” Five percent of Harris voters described the United States as “the worst.”
Among Trump voters, 54% said America is “the greatest” country, and 27% said it is “among the greatest.” The survey found that 0% of Trump voters described America as the worst country.
The poll was released ahead of America’s semiquincentennial celebration and the Great American State Fair on the National Mall.
The findings also follow another Economist/YouGov survey, cited by Breitbart News, that found nearly four in 10 Democrats said they were “ashamed” to be American.
The latest results show that while a majority of respondents overall view the United States as at least better than average, views of American exceptionalism remain sharply divided along partisan and ideological lines.
