Egypt secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after battling to a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran in their final Group G match, sealing second place behind Belgium.

The Pharaohs made the perfect start in Seattle, taking the lead just five minutes into the contest through Mahmoud Saber. Iran responded quickly, with Ramin Rezaeian equalizing in the 14th minute after Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved Mehdi Taremi’s penalty but could not prevent the rebound from being converted.

Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the remainder of the match before a frantic finish produced late drama. Iran pushed desperately for a winner, with Taremi heading against the crossbar before Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score deep into stoppage time.

However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, crushing Iran’s celebrations and ensuring the match ended level.

The draw lifted Egypt to five points, enough to reach the Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history. They will now face Australia in the knockout round after finishing as Group G runners-up. Belgium topped the group following a convincing 5-1 victory over New Zealand.

Iran finished the group stage unbeaten with three consecutive draws but remained on three points and were left anxiously awaiting results from other groups to determine whether they could advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
