Cape Verde completed one of the most remarkable stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a place in the knockout stage with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup round of 32 in its tournament debut.
The result was enough to send the African nation through as runners-up in Group H with three points from three consecutive draws. Spain finished top of the group after defeating Uruguay 1-0 in the other decisive fixture, while both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were eliminated with two points each.
Cape Verde’s campaign has captured the imagination of football fans worldwide. The debutants opened their tournament with a goalless draw against Spain before earning an impressive 2-2 comeback draw against Uruguay. Against Saudi Arabia, they once again displayed defensive discipline and resilience to protect the point they needed.
Midfielder Deroy Duarte, who was named player of the match, described the achievement as a dream come true after the final whistle.
“I feel like I’m in a dream,” Duarte said, adding that the team would now turn its attention to a difficult knockout clash against defending champions Argentina.
Although Cape Verde created several opportunities, they were unable to find the decisive goal. Goalkeeper Vozinha produced another composed performance, while the defense frustrated Saudi Arabia throughout a tense contest.
The draw sparked emotional celebrations among players and supporters, who recognized the significance of the achievement for the island nation. Cape Verde will now face Argentina in the round of 32, hoping to extend what has already become one of the tournament’s most memorable underdog stories.
