The U.S. government has approved a limited re-release of Anthropic’s advanced Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model, allowing access to a select group of trusted organizations after weeks of restrictions imposed over national security concerns.
The decision marks a partial reversal of the government’s earlier directive that halted access to Anthropic’s most powerful AI systems, including Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Officials had raised concerns that the technology’s sophisticated cybersecurity capabilities could be misused by hostile actors or expose sensitive infrastructure.
Under the revised arrangement, more than 100 vetted U.S. organizations involved in cybersecurity, critical infrastructure and national defense will be permitted to use Mythos 5. The approved organizations are expected to include major corporations and participants in Anthropic’s Project Glasswing initiative.
The Commerce Department said Anthropic made significant progress in addressing cybersecurity concerns that led to the earlier restrictions. However, officials stressed that access remains tightly controlled and could be reviewed again if new risks emerge.
Anthropic welcomed the decision and said it is working to restore access for eligible users as quickly as possible. The company continues to cooperate with federal authorities while seeking broader availability of its AI systems in the future.
Despite the easing of restrictions, public access to Fable 5 remains suspended, and the government has not announced when broader deployment of Anthropic’s frontier AI models might resume. Critics have also questioned the transparency of the selection process for organizations receiving access, arguing that clearer standards are needed as the United States develops a long-term framework for regulating advanced artificial intelligence.
