A cargo ship traveling near the Strait of Hormuz was struck Thursday by an unknown projectile, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center.
The incident occurred about 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Dahit, Oman, near one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints for global energy shipments.
UKMTO said the vessel was hit on its starboard side, causing damage to the bridge.
“A cargo vessel has been hit on the starboard side by an unknown projectile, causing damage to the bridge,” the center said in an advisory.
No casualties were reported, and officials said there was no known environmental impact from the strike.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is a critical route for oil and gas shipments moving through the region. Any security incident near the waterway can raise concerns about commercial shipping and energy flows.
UKMTO advised ships operating in the area to remain alert and report unusual activity.
“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the advisory said.
The source of the projectile was not immediately identified.
