Cristiano Ronaldo etched another remarkable chapter into football history on Tuesday after becoming the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, leading Portugal with an early goal in its Group K clash against Uzbekistan.
The Portuguese captain wasted little time making his mark, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute of the match. João Cancelo delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Ronaldo calmly met the ball with a right-footed finish to hand Portugal an early 1-0 advantage. The veteran forward sprinted toward the bench in celebration before embracing his teammates as the significance of the moment quickly became clear.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo added yet another milestone to an already legendary international career. His latest strike also made him the second-oldest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup, trailing only Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who famously scored at the age of 42 during the 1994 tournament in the United States.
The historic goal came at an important moment for Ronaldo, who had faced criticism following Portugal’s opening 1-1 draw against Congo, a match in which the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was unable to find the net despite several opportunities. Tuesday’s performance provided the perfect response, as the veteran striker once again demonstrated his ability to deliver on football’s biggest stage.
Earlier this year, Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the first male players to appear in six FIFA World Cup tournaments. Ronaldo’s World Cup journey began in Germany in 2006, and he has now scored in every edition since, adding goals in South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022, and now the 2026 tournament.
While Messi shares the record for the most World Cup appearances, Ronaldo now stands alone as the only player to score in each of his six World Cup campaigns. Messi, despite enjoying one of the greatest international careers in football history, did not score during Argentina’s 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
The goal against Uzbekistan was also another landmark in Ronaldo’s extraordinary international career. The match marked his 230th appearance for Portugal, extending his own world record for the most international caps by a men’s player. Throughout more than two decades representing his country, Ronaldo has continued to redefine longevity and consistency at the highest level of the sport.
Ronaldo’s latest World Cup goal brought his career tournament tally to nine, further strengthening his place among the competition’s greatest scorers. Meanwhile, Messi continues to lead the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 18 goals after opening the tournament with a hat trick against Algeria before adding two more goals in Argentina’s victory over Austria.
Although Ronaldo has yet to confirm his retirement plans, the 2026 World Cup is widely expected to be the final appearance of his remarkable international career. Few players have enjoyed a résumé as decorated as the Portuguese icon, who captained Portugal to its first major international title at the 2016 UEFA European Championship and collected five UEFA Champions League titles during his club career with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
With another historic goal added to his long list of achievements, Ronaldo once again proved why he remains one of football’s most influential and enduring figures. His record-breaking strike against Uzbekistan further cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players the game has ever produced and added another unforgettable moment to an already extraordinary World Cup career.
