Erling Haaland continued his remarkable FIFA World Cup form by scoring twice as Norway defeated Senegal 3-2 in a thrilling Group I clash, securing a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since 1998.
Playing in New Jersey on Monday night, Norway weathered an energetic start from Senegal before taking control of the contest. The breakthrough came just before halftime when substitute Marcus Pedersen capitalized on a defensive lapse to put the Norwegians ahead. Haaland then took center stage in the second half, converting two chances created by captain Martin Odegaard to give Norway a commanding lead.
Senegal fought back through a brace from Ismaila Sarr, including a goal deep into stoppage time, but the African side could not complete the comeback. Defensive errors and Norway’s clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive.
The victory means Norway has won its opening two matches of the tournament, following a 4-1 triumph over Iraq. Haaland has scored four goals in those two games, establishing himself as one of the leading contenders for the tournament’s Golden Boot.
Norway now sits on six points and has guaranteed progression to the last 32 alongside France, which also won its second group match. The two European nations will meet in their final Group I fixture to determine the group winner. Senegal, meanwhile, faces a difficult path forward and may need a strong result against Iraq to keep its hopes of advancing alive.
After the final whistle, Norway’s players celebrated with their supporters by performing the now-famous “Viking row,” marking a historic night for a nation making its first World Cup appearance in 28 years.
