Independent energy company NatPower and electric vehicle maker Tesla have entered into a major partnership to develop large-scale battery energy storage projects in Italy and Britain, launching the first phase of an initiative that could be worth as much as $5 billion.
The companies announced Tuesday that they plan to deploy 25 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery storage capacity using Tesla’s Megapack energy storage systems. The project represents one of the most ambitious battery storage programs currently planned in Europe and is designed to support the continent’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
As European countries continue to expand renewable energy generation, battery storage has become increasingly important in maintaining grid stability. Renewable sources such as wind and solar power can generate electricity intermittently depending on weather conditions, creating challenges for energy networks that require a constant balance between supply and demand. Large-scale battery systems help address this issue by storing excess electricity when production is high and releasing it when demand rises or renewable generation falls.
Under the multi-year agreement, NatPower will deploy Tesla’s Megapack battery technology across a series of energy storage facilities. The company will also utilize Tesla’s advanced energy trading platform, which helps operators determine the most efficient times to purchase, store, and sell electricity in wholesale energy markets.
The partnership will begin with five initial battery storage projects that form the first stage of a broader development plan. The long-term objective is to build more than 100 GWh of energy storage capacity, making it one of the largest battery infrastructure programs in the region.
Construction costs for the overall project are expected to range between $4 billion and $5 billion. The companies said the initiative could generate more than $15 billion in revenue over a 20-year period, highlighting the growing economic opportunities associated with energy storage as electricity markets evolve.
Industry experts view battery storage as a critical component of Europe’s energy transition strategy. Governments across the continent are investing heavily in renewable energy projects to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security. However, expanding renewable generation requires complementary technologies that can store electricity and ensure reliable power supplies during periods when wind and solar output is lower.
NatPower Chief Executive Officer Fabrizio Zago said the partnership addresses one of the industry’s biggest challenges: transforming available capital and technology into completed infrastructure projects. While investors and developers have shown strong interest in the energy storage sector, many projects have faced delays due to permitting, financing, and execution hurdles.
Zago said the ecosystem created through the partnership with Tesla helps align financial resources, technology deployment, and project execution, providing a framework that can be replicated in multiple markets. He added that the model could accelerate the delivery of critical energy infrastructure and support the growing demand for grid-scale storage solutions.
For Tesla, the agreement further expands its presence in the global energy business, which has become an increasingly important part of the company’s operations alongside its electric vehicle segment. The company’s Megapack systems are already being used in large-scale energy projects worldwide, helping utilities and energy developers manage electricity supplies and improve grid reliability.
As Europe continues to pursue ambitious renewable energy targets, large battery storage projects such as the NatPower-Tesla initiative are expected to play a vital role in modernizing power systems and supporting the region’s long-term clean energy goals.
