Three people were killed Monday in a shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, including a police officer, a Jewish civilian and the suspect, according to local authorities.
The Montreal Police Department said a second officer was injured in the shooting. A shelter-in-place order issued during the emergency has since been lifted.
Police have not released the names of those killed and have not identified a motive.
Montreal police said officers were called to the Côte-des-Neiges area after a witness reported seeing a gun sticking out of a window, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The neighborhood is known as a prominent Jewish area in the city.
When officers arrived, they were fired upon, authorities said. One officer was killed and another was injured.
Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said the department was mourning the loss of the officer and supporting the surviving officer.
“Today, one of ours has fallen in the line of duty,” Dagher said during a news briefing. “It’s a very, very sad day, it’s a nightmare. But we have to be solid. We have to be solid for the lady police officer who survived and we’re all behind her.”
Authorities said the suspect was also killed. Police did not immediately provide additional details about the sequence of events, the weapon used or whether the Jewish civilian was targeted.
The investigation remains ongoing as Montreal police work to determine what led to the shooting and notify relatives of the victims.
