Late Meals May Worsen Blood Sugar Control and Metabolic Health, Review Finds

A research review found that people who eat a large share of their daily calories after 5 p.m. tend to have poorer glycemic control, reduced insulin sensitivity and higher cardiometabolic risk.

Eating late in the day may make it harder for the body to control blood sugar, even when total calories and diet quality are taken into account, according to a research review examining meal timing and cardiometabolic health.

The review, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, analyzed human studies through December 2025 and found that people who consume a large portion of their daily calories after 5 p.m. are more likely to show poorer glycemic control, lower insulin sensitivity and higher risk factors for obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Researchers compared circadian-aligned eating patterns, in which more calories are consumed earlier in the day, with late eating patterns, defined as consuming at least 45% of daily energy after 5 p.m.

The review did not collect new data. Instead, it synthesized existing observational studies, clinical trials and mechanistic research to determine whether meal timing has an effect on metabolic health independent of what or how much people eat.

The findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that when a person eats may matter in addition to food quality and calorie intake.

Studies reviewed by the authors consistently found that late eaters had worse metabolic outcomes than people who ate earlier, even after accounting for differences in diet composition and total calories.

Late eaters showed poorer blood sugar regulation and reduced insulin sensitivity. They were also more likely to have obesity and a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Researchers described earlier, circadian-aligned eating patterns as more “metabolically favorable,” particularly when larger meals were consumed earlier in the day.

The review supports the field of chrononutrition, which studies how the timing of food intake interacts with the body’s internal clock. Circadian rhythms help regulate many biological processes, including insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, digestion, fat storage and energy use.

Insulin sensitivity is naturally higher in the morning and tends to decline later in the day. That means the body generally handles carbohydrates and blood sugar more efficiently earlier in the day than it does at night.

Michael Greger, MD, wrote in How Not to Diet that “in the morning, our muscles are especially sensitive to insulin, rapidly pulling blood sugar out of our bloodstreams to build up glycogen reserves. At night, though, our muscles become relatively insulin-resistant and resist the signal to take in extra blood sugar.”

Because of that rhythm, the same meal may produce a stronger blood sugar and insulin response when eaten at night than when eaten in the morning.

Researchers also noted that the body burns fewer calories digesting food in the evening than it does earlier in the day. This process, known as diet-induced thermogenesis, appears to be lower at night.

Dallas Clouatre wrote in Anti-fat Nutrients that “there is some evidence that the timing of meals is important. Calories eaten in the evening before bedtime are more likely to be stored as fat.”

This mismatch between eating late and the body’s natural metabolic rhythm is known as circadian misalignment. Over time, researchers said, circadian misalignment may contribute to insulin resistance, blood lipid problems and higher cardiometabolic risk.

Other research has reached similar conclusions.

A study from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that late-night snacking may increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Separate long-term studies have associated later breakfast timing with higher mortality risk, suggesting that both the first and last meals of the day may influence long-term health.

The review’s authors recommended practical changes rather than extreme dietary rules.

They advised front-loading calories by eating the largest meal earlier in the day, keeping meal timing consistent and setting a soft dinner cutoff around 6 or 7 p.m. For people who naturally prefer later schedules, researchers suggested gradually moving dinner earlier in 30-minute increments.

The review also recommended treating breakfast as an important anchor meal and avoiding irregular eating patterns that may disrupt circadian rhythms.

Time-restricted eating may help some people reduce late-night food intake, particularly if the eating window ends several hours before bedtime. A Northwestern University study found that extending the overnight fast to 13 to 16 hours and stopping food at least three hours before bed lowered nighttime blood pressure and heart rate.

The research does not mean everyone must follow the same schedule or that eating after 5 p.m. is automatically harmful. Individual work schedules, sleep timing, medical conditions and personal routines all matter.

However, the broader pattern in the literature suggests that regularly eating a large share of daily calories late in the evening may place extra strain on blood sugar regulation.

The findings point to a simple, low-cost strategy for metabolic health: shift more calories earlier in the day, keep meals consistent and avoid heavy late-night eating when possible.

For people concerned about blood sugar, weight gain or cardiometabolic risk, meal timing may be a useful tool alongside diet quality, physical activity, sleep and stress management.

The review concludes that eating earlier aligns food intake with the body’s natural metabolic peak, while late eating may push digestion and glucose handling into a period when the body is less prepared to manage them efficiently.
