President Donald Trump said Sunday that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign, adding to political uncertainty surrounding the Labour leader as he faces rising pressure over immigration, energy policy and renewed scrutiny of grooming gang failures in the United Kingdom.
Starmer, who became prime minister in July 2024, had not publicly confirmed his resignation at the time of the report.
Trump announced the reported departure in a Truth Social post, saying Starmer had failed on two major issues.
“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!” Trump posted.
The statement came as Starmer’s political standing has been weakened by internal Labour pressure, public dissatisfaction and fallout from the Rape Gang Inquiry Report, released Tuesday by Restore Britain Member of Parliament Rupert Lowe.
The report states that 250,000 girls were raped by Muslim grooming gangs in the United Kingdom. Its release placed renewed attention on Starmer’s past role as head of the Crown Prosecution Service, a position he held before entering Parliament.
The Lowe report alleges that “predominantly Muslim Pakistani gangs across towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom” engaged in the “systematic targeting” of predominantly white girls.
“Across Britain, clear evidence of organised abuse by Pakistani gangs, among other majority-Muslim ethnic groups, was ignored because confronting it risked accusations of racism,” the report states.
The political pressure on Starmer has also intensified since Andy Burnham won a by-election after pledging to mount an internal Labour challenge against him. Burnham’s victory has fueled speculation that Starmer may no longer command enough confidence within his own party to remain in office.
Starmer’s popularity has declined steadily since he entered Downing Street. Earlier this year, he also faced pressure after files related to registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were released in January.
Those files revealed Epstein’s close ties to Peter Mandelson, Starmer’s chosen ambassador to the United States. Starmer said Mandelson had misled him about his links to Epstein, but the controversy contributed to Labour’s political troubles and was followed by Reform Party gains in local council elections.
The latest speculation over Starmer’s future combines several political vulnerabilities: public anger over immigration, criticism of energy policy, scrutiny of historic child sexual exploitation cases and a potential leadership challenge from within Labour.
Trump’s post did not provide a timetable for Starmer’s departure, and no formal resignation announcement had been made by Starmer at the time of publication.
If Starmer steps down, Britain would face another leadership transition less than two years after Labour took power. If he remains in office, he is likely to face continued pressure from rivals inside Labour and opposition parties seeking to capitalize on his weakened position.
