A fatal freight train collision in the German city of Munich has left one person dead and triggered a major emergency response after two cargo trains crashed in the early hours of Saturday, causing rail cars to derail and plunge from a bridge onto a road below.

The accident occurred in Munich’s northern district of Milbertshofen at approximately 1:40 a.m. local time. According to local authorities, the collision involved two freight trains traveling through the area when, for reasons that remain unclear, they struck one another on a railway bridge. The force of the impact caused at least two train cars to derail and fall from the elevated track, crashing onto the street beneath.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the collision. Around 60 firefighters, rescue workers, and other first responders were deployed to secure the area, assess the damage, and search for casualties. Images from the site showed severely damaged freight cars lying across the roadway below the bridge, highlighting the scale of the accident.

Police later confirmed that one person had been killed in the crash. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the victim’s identity, pending notification of family members. It was not immediately clear whether there were any additional injuries, although emergency crews remained at the scene for several hours carrying out recovery and safety operations.

The collision caused significant disruption to rail traffic in the area as investigators and engineers worked to determine the extent of the damage to both the railway infrastructure and the bridge itself. Local transportation officials are expected to conduct extensive inspections before rail services can fully resume.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident. A police spokesperson said the exact cause of the collision remains unknown and is currently being examined by railway safety experts and accident investigators. Officials will review train operating records, signalling systems, and other technical data to establish how the crash occurred.

Rail accidents involving freight trains are relatively uncommon in Germany, which is known for its extensive and generally reliable railway network. However, Saturday’s tragedy has renewed concerns about rail safety and infrastructure management, particularly on busy freight corridors that handle large volumes of cargo traffic every day.

As investigators continue their work, local residents and commuters have been urged to avoid the affected area while recovery operations remain underway. Authorities are expected to provide further updates once more information becomes available regarding the circumstances that led to the deadly collision.
