The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran Observer.
The move comes amid escalating regional tensions, with Iran citing Israel’s continued military presence in southern Lebanon and the ongoing deployment of U.S. forces in the region. According to the New York Post, Tehran claims the conditions of the recently brokered ceasefire agreement have not been fulfilled.
Israel’s Military Presence in Lebanon
Israel scaled back its military operations in Lebanon following the recent U.S.-Iran peace agreement after U.S. President Donald Trump urged Israel to halt its offensive, citing concerns over civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure beyond Hezbollah targets.
Despite largely adhering to the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly maintained that security threats against Israel persist.
On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that its troops remain deployed approximately 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory for what it described as “operational requirements.”
“The IDF is deployed in the Security Zone, approximately 10 km inside Lebanese territory, due to operational requirements. IDF soldiers will continue to remove threats and strengthen the defense of Israel’s northern residents,” the military said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the IDF continues operations against Hamas in Gaza, targeting what it says are efforts by the group to rebuild its military capabilities.
IRGC Statement
The IRGC said the Strait of Hormuz has been closed in response to Israel’s attacks in Lebanon and alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement.
According to the statement:
- “The conditions of the ceasefire in Lebanon and the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the area have not been met by the United States.”
- “Ships approaching the Strait will be targeted.”
U.S. Response
As of the latest available information, there has been no official response from the United States regarding the IRGC’s announcement.
