For Dr. Joseph Wasselle Sr., medicine has never been just a profession — it has been a lifelong calling.
Over more than two decades at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital in Florida, he dedicated himself to caring for patients while raising a son who was quietly paying attention.
Years later, that son would follow in his footsteps.
Recently, Dr. Joseph Wasselle Sr. and his son, Dr. Joseph Wasselle Jr., shared a milestone that was both historic and deeply personal when they worked side by side during a groundbreaking procedure at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital.
The procedure marked the first endovascular aneurysm repair, or EVAR, performed in one of the health system's cardiac catheterization labs. The minimally invasive procedure offers patients an alternative to open surgery and can lead to shorter recovery times.
For the Wasselle family, however, the moment represented far more than a medical first.
According to a press release from Orlando Health obtained by The Bright Story, Dr. Wasselle Jr. recently performed the hospital's first EVAR procedure in its newly opened cardiac catheterization lab while his father looked on with pride.
“From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be a surgeon,” Dr. Wasselle Jr. said in the release. “I grew up watching my dad and the way he cared for patients. To now be here, working alongside him — it's incredibly meaningful.”

The younger surgeon joined Orlando Health last fall and has spent recent months building his vascular surgery practice while helping expand the capabilities of the hospital's new cath lab.
For his father, the experience was a powerful reminder of how quickly time passes.
“For decades, I've dedicated my career to this hospital and to my patients,” Dr. Wasselle Sr. said in the release. “But seeing your son step into that same role — and excel — is something you can't put into words. It's one of the proudest moments of my life.”
The milestone also highlighted the evolving nature of medicine.
While observing the procedure, Dr. Wasselle Sr. found himself learning from the next generation.
“Technology and techniques are always advancing,” he said. “In that moment, I wasn't just his father — I was also learning from him. It's incredible to see the next generation take things even further.”
The father-and-son journey began long before they entered an operating room together.
Speaking with PEOPLE, Dr. Wasselle Jr. reflected on growing up with a father whose dedication to patients left a lasting impression.
“I was very lucky to see firsthand the dedication to his work as a surgeon as I grew up, and although that meant occasional long nights and weekends at the hospital or staying behind during hurricanes while the family evacuated, he always loved what he did,” he told PEOPLE.
Watching that commitment helped shape his own future.
“I knew early on that I wanted to be a doctor, and I think seeing his dedication to the profession helped solidify my decision,” he said.
As he progressed through medical school and surgical training, his father remained a trusted source of advice and encouragement.
“I remember calling my dad on tough days in training to talk about cases, what he would have done and similar things he'd seen in practice throughout the years,” Dr. Wasselle Jr. told PEOPLE.
The recent procedure offered a rare opportunity for the two men to work together not simply as father and son, but as colleagues.
“Throughout your career as a surgeon, you are always being watched,” Dr. Wasselle Jr. told PEOPLE. “It begins in training, showing your mentors and teachers that you have the technical skills required as a surgeon. It continues with your colleagues, sharing interesting findings or lending a helping hand in a difficult case. We are watched by patients and families alike in how we care for others.
“But none of those moments are quite as fulfilling as being able to show your dad what you have become, to work on cases together and to support each other.”
For Dr. Wasselle Sr., seeing his son's confidence in the operating room was both rewarding and emotional.

“Walking in and seeing my son's confidence and skills gave me a tremendous sense of pride, but also happiness at the realization that Joe has begun the next phase in his career, where he will help so many people in his lifetime,” he told PEOPLE.
“I am so proud of Joe — my son, my colleague.”
The two physicians share another connection. According to PEOPLE, both attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine and were mentored by some of the same physicians decades apart.
“He was mentored by some of the same physicians that trained me decades earlier,” Dr. Wasselle Sr. told PEOPLE. “I received many reports from Joe's professors stating that Joe was a great doctor with exceptional surgical skills.

“I was ecstatic when Joe said that he wanted to work together.”
The milestone procedure also represented a significant achievement for Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital. According to the hospital, the new cath lab has expanded access to advanced cardiovascular and vascular treatments in the region and has already supported hundreds of procedures since opening earlier this year.
“Opening this cath lab has been a major priority for our team, and seeing it support a procedure like this so soon after opening is incredibly rewarding,” Wendy Noble, cath lab manager at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, said in the release. “This milestone reflects not only advanced technology, but also the collaboration, preparation and dedication of our physicians and staff to bring cutting-edge vascular care to our community.”
Yet amid the medical advances and historic firsts, the story remains a simple one about a father and a son.
A son who grew up watching his father serve others.
A father who lived long enough to see his son carry that legacy forward.
And a moment in an operating room that reminded them both how meaningful it is to share a calling.
“As a father, there's nothing more rewarding than seeing your child find their purpose,” Dr. Wasselle Sr. said in the Orlando Health release. “And to be able to witness it up close, in the same place where I've spent my career — that makes it even more special.”
