SpaceX has announced a landmark $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind the fast-growing AI coding platform Cursor, in a move that significantly strengthens Elon Musk’s ambitions in the artificial intelligence sector.
The deal comes just days after SpaceX’s blockbuster stock market debut, which pushed the company’s valuation above $2 trillion and transformed it into one of the most valuable companies in the world. By acquiring Cursor, SpaceX is expanding beyond its traditional strengths in aerospace, satellite communications, and AI infrastructure, while positioning itself as a major competitor in the rapidly growing market for enterprise AI software.
Cursor has emerged as one of Silicon Valley’s most successful AI coding tools, helping software developers write, edit, and optimize code using artificial intelligence. The platform has gained widespread popularity among programmers and businesses seeking to improve productivity and reduce software development times. Its rapid growth has made it one of the strongest challengers to AI products offered by industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
The acquisition also strengthens SpaceX’s AI division, xAI, which became part of the company earlier this year. AI-powered coding assistants represent one of the first areas where artificial intelligence has generated substantial business revenue, making the sector strategically important for companies competing in the broader AI race.
Industry analysts believe the purchase will give SpaceX access to one of the largest and most valuable collections of real-world software development data. Cursor’s platform captures coding requests, programming workflows, and developer decision-making processes, information that could be used to train and improve future generations of AI models.
SpaceX revealed that it plans to integrate Cursor’s technology with Grok Build, xAI’s coding assistant that has already been under development for several months. The company also indicated that future AI models would be released directly through Cursor’s platform, creating a tighter connection between its software products and AI ecosystem.
The transaction highlights how aggressively SpaceX is using its soaring market valuation to expand. Because the acquisition is being funded entirely with stock rather than cash, the company can complete the purchase while preserving the billions of dollars raised during its recent initial public offering. Analysts note that SpaceX’s enormous valuation means the deal will result in relatively limited shareholder dilution compared with what most companies would face in a transaction of this size.
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in San Francisco, Anysphere has experienced explosive growth. The company has reportedly reached approximately $2.6 billion in annualized revenue and attracted backing from some of the most influential investors in technology, including venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital, as well as major technology players such as Nvidia and Google. Before the acquisition announcement, Anysphere had reportedly been seeking fresh funding at a valuation of roughly $50 billion.
The acquisition also raises questions about SpaceX’s broader AI infrastructure strategy. In recent weeks, the company signed major agreements to provide cloud computing capacity to both Anthropic and Google. Those contracts include termination clauses that could allow SpaceX to redirect computing resources internally if demand for Grok and Cursor increases substantially. Analysts believe the company now has the flexibility to either continue serving external customers or dedicate more computing power to its own expanding AI operations.
Investors reacted positively to the news, sending SpaceX shares sharply higher in early trading. The rally added hundreds of billions of dollars to the company’s market value and positioned it to surpass Amazon as the world’s fifth-largest publicly traded company.
The acquisition is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals. If completed, it will rank among the largest artificial intelligence deals ever announced and could reshape the competitive landscape of AI-powered software development.
For SpaceX, the transaction represents far more than an acquisition. It is a clear signal that the company intends to become a dominant force not only in space exploration and communications but also in the next generation of artificial intelligence technologies.
