President Donald Trump headed to France on June 15 for the annual Group of Seven summit, arriving just after announcing a new agreement with Iran that is expected to shape the opening discussions among world leaders.
The summit, scheduled for June 15 through June 17 in the French spa town of Évian-les-Bains, will bring together leaders from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The talks are expected to center on global trade, immigration, energy security, geopolitical conflicts, artificial intelligence and other international issues.
Trump left the White House early June 15 after attending a UFC championship event staged on the White House grounds to mark America’s 250th birthday and his own 80th birthday.
The new Iran agreement and the war in Ukraine are expected to dominate much of the three-day gathering. Trump is scheduled to participate in a leaders’ meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and hold one-on-one meetings with Middle Eastern leaders during the summit. He is also expected to push for broader cooperation on critical mineral supply chains, illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Trump is expected to arrive in Évian-les-Bains on the afternoon of June 15, local time. His first scheduled meeting is with French President Emmanuel Macron, followed by an official greeting and a working dinner with G7 leaders.
On June 16, Trump is set to join a working session with G7 leaders and Zelenskyy. He is then scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the emir of Qatar and the president of the United Arab Emirates. Later that day, G7 leaders will meet for a working lunch with Arab leaders before taking part in a session on international investment partnerships. The day is expected to conclude with a social dinner and cultural performance.
On June 17, Trump is scheduled to join talks on economic growth before holding bilateral meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is also expected to take part in a working lunch focused on innovation and artificial intelligence with G7 leaders, outreach partners and technology executives. Macron will host a dinner at the Palace of Versailles before Trump departs France that night.
A major focus of the summit will be the newly announced Iran deal and the planned reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global energy supplies.
Trump announced the agreement June 14 on Truth Social.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!” Trump wrote. “I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
During a June 13 call with reporters, a senior administration official said the United States expects G7 countries to assist with the next phase of implementation, including clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz. The official said the United States has the ability to conduct demining operations but that help from G7 partners would speed the reopening of the waterway.
The United Kingdom and France announced in April that they had formed an international coalition to “conduct mine clearance operations as soon as conditions permit following a sustainable ceasefire agreement.”
Ukraine will also be central to the G7 talks. Trump is expected to discuss efforts to end the war with other leaders, as Zelenskyy seeks continued international attention and support.
“We want the war to end as quickly as possible,” the senior administration official said, describing the conflict as one of Trump’s top priorities.
European leaders reportedly believe the war is now moving in Ukraine’s favor and plan to encourage Trump to support renewed negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, with Europe involved in the process.
Trump invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska in August 2025 for talks on a possible Russia-Ukraine peace agreement, but the meeting ended without a breakthrough. The White House has not announced a formal bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy during the G7, though an official said the two leaders could still meet on the sidelines.
Questions about NATO are also expected to surface during the summit. Administration officials downplayed reports of major tension between Washington and European allies, saying there is broad agreement on the need for NATO members to carry more of the burden and strengthen the alliance’s defense industrial base.
“We’re very happy with some of the burden shifting that’s going on, and we need to see more of it,” the official said.
Trump recently criticized NATO members for what he described as a lack of support during the Iran war and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“It is a large, complex world with a lot of challenges,” the official added. “The United States can’t be the lead in every single region of the world.”
Trump is also expected to travel to Turkey next month for the NATO summit in Ankara.
Trade is another expected topic in France. The administration official praised France for placing global trade imbalances on the summit agenda, saying current trade disputes are driven largely by countries with major surpluses, especially China and, to some extent, the European Union.
“It’s encouraging to see the rest of the world finally coming around and wanting to tackle this issue,” the official said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend the summit. Talks between Washington and Ottawa over the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement are ongoing, though the administration does not expect a major breakthrough on that issue during the G7.
Artificial intelligence will also be part of Trump’s agenda. The White House said he plans to discuss AI adoption, regulatory streamlining and energy abundance with other G7 leaders.
The summit gives Trump a platform to press allies on several priorities at once, including reopening a major energy corridor, moving toward a Ukraine settlement, sharing NATO responsibilities more evenly, addressing global trade disputes and expanding cooperation on emerging technologies.
