The United States and India are expected to intensify efforts to finalize a long-discussed trade agreement as senior officials from both countries prepare for high-level meetings during next week’s Group of Seven (G7) summit in France. While no final agreement is expected to be announced during the gathering, officials on both sides have expressed optimism that negotiations are moving in a positive direction and that a deal remains within reach.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to travel to India shortly after the conclusion of the G7 summit to continue discussions aimed at resolving outstanding issues and advancing a potential bilateral trade pact. The planned visit signals Washington’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and reflects growing interest in expanding trade cooperation between the two countries.

Trade is expected to be a central topic when U.S. President Donald Trump meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit. The meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to review the progress made by negotiators and discuss broader economic and strategic priorities. However, U.S. officials have indicated that while discussions are advancing, more work remains before a comprehensive agreement can be finalized.

According to senior administration officials, Washington views India as an increasingly important strategic and economic partner. The United States believes that a successful trade agreement could strengthen bilateral relations, boost investment, improve market access for businesses in both countries, and deepen cooperation across a range of sectors.

Officials familiar with the negotiations said Trump remains committed to securing favorable terms for American businesses and workers. While expressing confidence that a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached, they cautioned that technical discussions and detailed negotiations will likely continue beyond the summit before any final deal is completed.

The G7 summit, taking place from June 15 to June 17 in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains, will bring together leaders from some of the world’s largest economies. Although India is not a member of the G7, Prime Minister Modi has been invited to participate in discussions alongside leaders from several other partner nations. The summit is expected to focus on global economic growth, trade, energy security, geopolitical tensions, and international cooperation.

Relations between New Delhi and Washington have faced challenges in recent months. U.S. tariffs on certain Indian goods have created friction between the two countries, while political disagreements have occasionally complicated diplomatic ties. In particular, President Trump’s repeated claims that he helped bring an end to a brief conflict between India and Pakistan last year have been firmly rejected by Indian officials, who maintain that the matter was resolved independently.

Despite those tensions, both governments have made efforts to improve relations and maintain momentum in trade discussions. The atmosphere surrounding negotiations has become noticeably more positive in recent weeks, with officials expressing optimism about the prospects for progress.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, recently stated that the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement could potentially be completed by mid-July. Indian negotiators are reportedly seeking preferential tariff treatment as part of an interim arrangement that could serve as a foundation for a broader and more comprehensive trade pact in the future.

Officials from both countries believe that the upcoming meeting between Trump and Modi will provide an opportunity to assess how far negotiations have advanced and identify areas where additional compromise may be necessary. Although expectations for an immediate breakthrough remain modest, the talks are widely viewed as an important step toward strengthening economic cooperation.

Beyond trade, the two leaders are also expected to discuss a range of geopolitical and strategic issues. Energy security is expected to feature prominently on the agenda, particularly as global markets continue to grapple with supply uncertainties and shifting geopolitical alliances. Discussions could also include India’s potential purchases of Venezuelan oil, an issue that has attracted increasing attention amid changing global energy dynamics.

Maritime security has emerged as another important area of concern in the relationship. Indian officials have voiced strong concerns following a series of attacks involving Indian-crewed commercial vessels operating in waters affected by ongoing regional tensions. India recently called for an end to military actions targeting shipping routes after several incidents involving tankers carrying Indian crew members.

The issue gained additional urgency after three Indian sailors were killed in one of the attacks, marking the first reported fatalities involving Indian nationals since the United States began enforcing measures against Iran-linked shipping activities earlier this year. The incidents have heightened concerns in New Delhi about the safety of maritime trade routes that are crucial to India’s economy and energy imports.

Diplomatic engagement on the matter has intensified in recent days. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed developments in the Strait of Hormuz with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, underscoring the importance both countries place on maintaining stability in one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.

The United States has emphasized its commitment to protecting commercial navigation and enforcing measures aimed at preventing the transportation of sanctioned Iranian oil. American officials maintain that compliance with maritime security directives is essential to preserving peace and stability in the region, while India continues to stress the importance of safeguarding international shipping and protecting civilian crews.

Trade discussions are also taking place on other fronts as Washington seeks to manage economic relationships with key partners. U.S. officials confirmed that Canada has recently approached American authorities about holding additional discussions on trade issues. The United States welcomed Canada’s decision to scale back some proposed measures that could have negatively affected American streaming companies and digital service providers.

Although discussions regarding the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement continue regularly, officials indicated that no major breakthroughs are expected during the G7 summit. Instead, the focus is likely to remain on maintaining dialogue and addressing specific concerns through ongoing negotiations.

As world leaders gather in France, the meeting between Trump and Modi is expected to draw significant attention from investors, businesses, and policymakers alike. The outcome of their discussions could shape the future direction of one of the world’s most important bilateral relationships and influence trade, investment, and strategic cooperation between the United States and India for years to come. With both sides expressing optimism and negotiations advancing steadily, many observers believe a trade agreement may be closer than ever, even if final details still need to be worked out.
