A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and injured three others in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region Saturday, local officials said, as Kyiv continues targeting military and energy infrastructure far beyond the front line.
Krasnodar Gov. Veniamin Kondratyev said debris from the drone strike ignited a fire at a sea terminal. He did not provide additional details about the site, but Russian news outlets reported that the damage occurred at a Black Sea export terminal in the village of Volna that handles crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied gas.
Ukraine’s General Staff did not comment Saturday on the reported Krasnodar strike. However, it said Ukrainian forces struck an oil preparation and pumping station overnight in Russia’s Volgograd region. The General Staff also said Ukrainian forces hit targets in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The latest attack followed remarks from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said Ukrainian forces had struck several military and energy infrastructure sites deep inside Russia. Zelenskyy said the targets included a military factory that supplied components used in Russian drones and missiles.
Zelenskyy said Wednesday that Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo long-range missiles struck the facility in Cheboksary, located in Russia’s Chuvashiya region more than 900 kilometers, or 560 miles, from the front line.
The strikes come more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The front line, stretching more than 1,000 kilometers, or 620 miles, has remained largely static as drones have made major ground advances more difficult for both sides. With battlefield movement limited, Ukraine and Russia have increasingly relied on long-range attacks against infrastructure, military facilities and other strategic targets.
Russian President Vladimir Putin last week pledged to strengthen the country’s air defenses after Ukrainian strikes set fire to an oil terminal in St. Petersburg and hit a nearby naval base. Those attacks took place as an economic forum was being held in Putin’s hometown.
Russia also carried out strikes in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, where regional authorities said nine people were injured and a local marketplace caught fire.
Oleksandr Hanzha, the regional head, said in a Telegram post Saturday that Russian forces attacked three districts of the region more than 20 times using drones and aerial bombs. Six people were hospitalized, including one man who was in critical condition, Hanzha said.
The continued strikes on both sides underscore the expanding role of drones and long-range weapons in the war, as Ukraine targets Russian energy and military sites while Russia continues attacks across Ukrainian regions.
