Gas prices are always a hot topic, and maximizing our dollars at the pump is something we all strive for! But while we're keeping an eye on the price per gallon, it's just as important to keep a watchful eye on the pump itself.

By staying informed and aware, you can easily protect your hard-earned money from a sneaky new tampering tactic that police are urging drivers to look out for.

What is the "Screw Scam"?
Recently, the Timberville Police Department in Rockingham County, Virginia, issued a helpful warning to the public about a clever new trick scammers are using to steal gas.

Instead of relying on high-tech credit card skimmers, these thieves are going surprisingly low-tech. They are hiding something as simple as a small screw inside the nozzle cradle.

Here is exactly how the scam plays out:

The Setup: The strategically placed screw prevents the pump's internal switch from fully engaging when you put the nozzle back.

The Trap: Because the cradle doesn't fully depress, your transaction never actually closes out.

The Theft: After you confidently drive away thinking you've finished paying, the scammer swoops in to fill up their own tank—right on your dime!

How to Protect Yourself
The great news is that this scam is incredibly easy to defeat once you know what to look for! You don't need to be a tech expert to keep your wallet safe; you just need to be observant.

Here are a few quick, empowering habits to adopt the next time you fill up your tank:

Inspect the Cradle: Before lifting the nozzle, take a quick glance inside the cradle to ensure there are no screws, foreign objects, or strange obstructions.

Listen for the Click: When you return the nozzle, make sure it sits completely flush in the cradle. Feel for the mechanism depressing and listen for the definitive "click" that signals the pump has shut off.

Watch the Screen: Always look at the pump's digital display before you drive away to confirm that your specific transaction has officially ended and the screen has reset.

Awareness is our absolute best defense! By taking just a few extra seconds of your time at the pump, you can confidently fuel up, outsmart the scammers, and keep your money exactly where it belongs. Safe travels and happy driving!
