Some of the most unforgettable wedding memories are the ones no one plans for.
When Stephen Joseph, 37, and Kelly Joseph, 32, traveled to Yosemite National Park on May 21 for an adventurous photo shoot celebrating their private elopement, they expected breathtaking views, towering cliffs and a sunset backdrop unlike any other.
What they didn't expect was a black bear.
The surprise encounter turned an already extraordinary day into what their photographer would later describe as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The couple had eloped the previous year and chose Yosemite for a post-wedding photo session in their wedding attire. Known for its dramatic landscapes, the national park offered exactly the kind of adventure they were seeking.
As they hiked toward Taft Point with photographer Ariel Smartt of Smartt Duo Photography, they stopped frequently along the trail to take advantage of the scenery.
“On our hike to Taft Point, we stopped along the trail quite a few times to take advantage of the lighting and environment. It is such a magical place,” Kelly told PEOPLE.
Then came an unexpected warning.
“While we were in the middle of a shoot on the trail, someone stopped us and said there was a bear sighting and that we should be careful,” she recalled. “We laughed about it until it came up behind us!”
Moments later, a black bear emerged from the side of the trail, appearing far more interested in searching for food among fallen trees than in the people nearby.

According to the couple, the animal remained calm throughout the encounter.
“Luckily, it was docile, foraging without a care in the world,” Kelly told PEOPLE. “It was intimidating, but we never felt like there was any real danger. We kept our distance and kept the shoot going.”
Rather than panic, the newlyweds chose to embrace the unexpected moment.
Kelly credited Smartt for helping them remain comfortable while allowing them to decide how to proceed.

“Ariel, our photographer, was such a professional. She said we should leave if we wanted to, but Stephen and I wanted to stay and make the most of it,” Kelly said.
The bear lingered nearby for several minutes before eventually moving on.
During that brief window, Smartt recognized that something remarkable was unfolding.
Sharing the experience on Instagram, the photographer wrote: “As we hiked on trail to our sunset photo location in Yosemite National Park, a black bear appeared off the side of the trail, foraging for food on downed trees. The trail was busy with hikers and the bear paid no attention to any of us. A once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Smartt later nicknamed the bear “Cinnamon” and captured a series of rare photographs showing the couple smiling and kissing while the bear wandered peacefully in the background.
The resulting images transformed an already memorable photo shoot into something truly unique.
For Kelly, however, the experience was about more than the photographs.
“The day was so incredible from top to bottom, and the bear encounter absolutely made it even more special,” she told PEOPLE.
In fact, she found another part of the adventure far more intimidating.
“Standing on the edge of a cliff with a 3,000-foot sheer drop was much more intimidating than the bear, to be honest.”

Yosemite National Park is home to hundreds of black bears, according to the National Park Service. Visitors are advised to maintain a safe distance from wildlife, and the Josephs did exactly that throughout the encounter.
Looking back, what could have been a brief interruption became one of the most memorable moments of the couple's celebration.
Their experience serves as a reminder that while weddings can be carefully planned down to the smallest detail, some of the best memories come from the unexpected.
For Stephen and Kelly, a quiet hike through one of America's most iconic national parks became an adventure they will likely talk about for years to come — complete with an uninvited guest who wandered into their love story and left behind a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
