Pentagon personnel were ordered to shelter in place June 11 after building safety systems detected an air quality issue inside the Department of War’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

Assistant War Secretary Sean Parnell confirmed the precautionary lockdown in a statement on X, saying officials acted to protect staff while determining the seriousness of the issue.

“The Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants,” Parnell said. “Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance.”

Parnell said the Department of War was carrying out standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area.

Response teams were also positioned to assist building occupants if needed, he said.

The department did not immediately provide further details about the source of the air quality issue, whether anyone was injured or how long the shelter-in-place order was expected to remain in effect.

The Pentagon remained under precautionary safety measures as officials worked to assess the detected air quality concern.
