We’ve all heard the age-old joke about the chicken crossing the road, but we rarely get to see what happens when it actually stops traffic. Recently, the Bethel Park Police Department in Pennsylvania found out firsthand—and the punchline ended with a feathery new recruit!
A Suspected Case of "Fowl Play"
On Sunday, May 31, Bethel Park police officers received a rather unusual dispatch. They were called to respond to reports of a chicken wandering into the street and completely blocking traffic.
When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect—identified as a beautiful Plymouth Rock variety chicken—wasn't quite ready to turn herself in. After what the department humorously described as a "brief pursuit," the officers successfully apprehended the wayward bird, putting a safe end to her dangerous game of frogger.
“After a brief interrogation, she claimed that she was NOT blocking traffic…but rather directing it…”, the department wrote.
Meet Lieutenant McQuail
Rather than throwing her in the clinker, the officers decided this plucky bird had exactly the kind of grit they look for in law enforcement. The rescue chicken was brought back to the police dispatch center and officially nicknamed Lt. McQuail.
To celebrate her "swearing-in," the department took to Instagram to share an absolutely adorable, AI-generated photo of Lt. McQuail fully decked out in a Bethel Park Police uniform, posing proudly alongside Officer Stephen Hozella.
A Safe and Happy Ending
While Lt. McQuail's career in law enforcement was short-lived, her retirement is looking incredibly bright. The police department confirmed that she was placed safely into a loving foster flock while they continue the search for her rightful owner.
In a world full of serious news, it's incredibly uplifting to see a community's officers go above and beyond for a creature so small. It just goes to show that no matter who you are (or what species you belong to), there's always a helping hand—or wing—ready to guide you safely off the road!
