President Donald Trump is reportedly taking steps to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East after a series of military exchanges between Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran raised fears of a major regional escalation.
According to reports, Trump intends to personally intervene by urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid launching retaliatory strikes against Iran following a missile attack on Israel. The development comes amid rapidly escalating tensions that began after Hezbollah launched rockets toward northern Israel, prompting a forceful Israeli response in Lebanon.
In a post shared on X, Axios global affairs correspondent Barak Ravid revealed that Trump told him he planned to contact Netanyahu directly and encourage restraint.
“I’m going to call Netanyahu and tell him not to strike back,” Trump reportedly said, signaling his concern that further military action could intensify the conflict and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.
The situation escalated after Israel carried out airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area known as a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah organization. Israeli officials said the strikes were conducted in response to Hezbollah rocket attacks targeting northern Israeli communities earlier in the day.
Shortly after Israel’s operation in Beirut, Iran launched a missile attack against Israel, raising the stakes in an already volatile confrontation. The attack marked one of the most direct exchanges between Iran and Israel in recent months and triggered air raid alerts across parts of Israel.
According to Axios, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that warning sirens sounded throughout northern Israel as several missiles were launched from Iran. Israeli military officials stated that air defense systems successfully intercepted the incoming missiles before they could cause significant damage.
Iranian state media claimed that multiple waves of missiles had been launched toward Israel, suggesting the operation was intended as a direct response to Israel’s military actions in Lebanon. However, Israeli officials maintained that the missile threat had been neutralized and that all incoming projectiles had either been intercepted or prevented from causing serious harm.
Despite the successful interceptions, the attack significantly heightened concerns that the conflict could spread beyond Israel and Lebanon, drawing additional regional powers into the confrontation.
As diplomatic efforts intensified behind the scenes, Trump reportedly emphasized the importance of avoiding further escalation. His comments reflected growing concerns within Washington that a broader military conflict could destabilize the region and complicate ongoing efforts to address security challenges through diplomacy.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military signaled that it was prepared to continue operations against Hezbollah targets. IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Efi Defrin stated that military planners were actively evaluating additional actions and would continue targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut if necessary.
“The IDF is working on military plans and will continue striking Hezbollah targets in Beirut,” Defrin said, underscoring Israel’s determination to respond to attacks originating from Lebanon.
Israeli officials defended the strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, arguing that they were necessary to deter future attacks and protect Israeli civilians. According to Israeli sources, Hezbollah’s earlier missile launch constituted a serious violation of regional security understandings and required an immediate response.
The latest round of violence has also highlighted the close coordination between Israel and the United States on security matters. According to Axios, a U.S. official and two additional sources familiar with the situation indicated that Israeli leaders informed the Trump administration in advance of the Beirut operation.
The notification reportedly allowed American officials to monitor developments closely and prepare for potential regional fallout following the strike.
While Washington has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself, U.S. officials have also emphasized the importance of preserving stability in Lebanon and preventing the conflict from expanding further.
A U.S. official told Axios that the United States continues to support Israel’s right to self-defense while also backing the internationally recognized Lebanese government.
“The United States supports Israel’s right to self-defense and stands with the legitimate Government of Lebanon as it works to deliver a better future for its citizens,” the official said.
The statement reflects the delicate balancing act facing U.S. policymakers as they seek to support a key ally while also encouraging restraint and preventing a broader regional war.
The rapidly evolving situation has placed world leaders on high alert, with concerns growing that additional military actions by Israel, Hezbollah, or Iran could trigger a larger conflict involving multiple countries across the Middle East.
For now, attention remains focused on whether diplomatic efforts led by Washington can help prevent further escalation. Trump’s planned conversation with Netanyahu is expected to play a key role in determining Israel’s next steps as military and political leaders assess their response options.
As tensions continue to rise, the coming days may prove critical in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or faces another dangerous cycle of retaliation and conflict.
