Bu Suan Zi · Tranquility
— The Flow of Mind Between Lakes and Mountains

By the small bridge outside the woods, gentle ripples rest in quiet calm.
A few drifting clouds float across the sky,
while green grass spreads along hidden paths.
A soft breeze brushes the face; the ocean of the mind stands still without waves.
From the mountain temple comes a pure chant of scriptures,
and in the ear only the sound of bells remains.
Cold wind touches the lakeside; chirping insects resound in lively disturbance.
Walking alone through the clear scenery, duckweed drifts and follows the wind.
As the sun sets into dusk, birds return early to their nests.
Whispered conversations swirl with joy; the rising evening moon is gently untroubled.
Flowing water holds the wind; ripples bend as fish stir the waves.
The affectionate sunset spreads a sky of glowing clouds,
while birds sing upon the branches.
Walking together by the lake, laughter and mountain songs arise.
A sense of harmony fills the air,
while the chirping insects remain softly nearby.
Appreciation
Bu Suan Zi · Tranquility presents a layered landscape unfolding from daylight to dusk and into evening, forming a flowing visual and emotional scroll of lakes and mountains. The poem does not merely depict external scenery; it emphasizes the inner movement of the mind as it follows the rhythm of nature, creating a dynamic cycle from stillness to motion and back to stillness.
The opening lines, “By the small bridge outside the woods, gentle ripples rest in quiet calm,” establish a serene visual foundation. The bridge, forest, and water form a classical natural composition, while the word “gentle” gives the scene emotional softness and sets the tranquil tone of the entire work.
“A soft breeze brushes the face; the ocean of the mind stands still without waves” marks the first major transition from outer landscape to inner state. The wind is felt physically, yet the mind becomes like a still sea, directly translating natural stillness into psychological equilibrium.
The line “From the mountain temple comes a pure chant of scriptures, and in the ear only the sound of bells remains” introduces auditory imagery, enriching the stillness with sound. Rather than disturbing the mind, the bells enhance clarity and deepen the spiritual quietude.
In the next section, “Cold wind touches the lakeside; chirping insects resound in lively disturbance,” movement and subtle noise enter the scene. The apparent “disturbance” paradoxically enhances emptiness and spaciousness, showing that tranquility is not absence of sound, but harmony with living rhythm.
“As the sun sets into dusk, birds return early to their nests” brings temporal progression, guiding the scene from brightness toward evening stillness, reinforcing the natural cycle.
“Flowing water holds the wind; ripples bend as fish stir the waves” zooms into micro-movements of nature, where water, wind, and fish interact delicately like breath itself, revealing the living structure of the landscape.
“The affectionate sunset spreads a sky of glowing clouds, while birds sing upon the branches” forms a visual and auditory climax, where color and sound merge into a luminous harmony of tranquility.
Finally, “Walking together by the lake, laughter and mountain songs arise” shifts from solitary reflection to shared presence. The closing image of “chirping insects nearby” returns the scene to its natural background soundscape, leaving a soft and enduring resonance.
Overall, the poem constructs a cyclical structure from stillness to motion and back again, expressing a profound unity between human consciousness and the natural world.
Editor’s Note
True tranquility is not a world without sound,
but a mind that is no longer carried away by sound.
When wind moves across the lake, birds sing in the trees, and insects sound in the night,
one can still remain peacefully present.
That is a mature and grounded inner stillness.
May we, amid noise and silence alike,
find our own balanced state of being.

unser eigenes Gleichgewicht finden.
