President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will hold a large rally in Washington, D.C., on June 24 to mark America’s 250th anniversary, replacing planned concert events after several musical performers withdrew from the celebration.
The rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will feature Trump, several speakers, patriotic music, military bands and choruses, according to the president’s Truth Social announcement.
“On Wednesday, June 24th, at 7 P.M., in magnificent Washington, D.C., now totally beautified, and one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the World, and in celebration of our Country’s 250 Year History, we will be bringing you, LIVE, the Greatest Rally, EVER!” Trump wrote. “It will be special at every level — A Rally to end all Rallies!”
Trump said the event would no longer rely on the concert lineup that had been planned as part of the Freedom 250 celebration.
“We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we’ve told them all to stay home,” Trump wrote. “All we want is you, me, a few speakers, and the Greatest Music ever played, the same Music you have listened to for years!”
Trump said Lee Greenwood, whose song “God Bless the U.S.A.” has long been a staple at his political events, will introduce him at the rally.
“We will have the fabulous Lee Greenwood introducing me with what has turned out to be one of the Greatest Hits of All Time, GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.,” Trump wrote.
The president also said tenor Christopher Macchio will perform several songs during the event.
Trump said Macchio “will sing Nessun Dorma, Hallelujah, Ave Maria, God Bless America, and others — Not since the legendary Luciano Pavarotti has there been such a voice!”
The rally will also feature the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Armed Forces Choir, the U.S. Marine Band known as “The President’s Own,” and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, Trump said.
“The Rally will also be featuring the wonderful U.S. Army Band ‘Pershing’s Own’ and Armed Forces Choir, and ‘The President’s Own’ Unites States Marine Band, with the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, all of your favorite Hits, PLUS a fine and highly dignified gentleman known as, President DONALD J. TRUMP!” Trump wrote.
The announcement follows weeks of complications surrounding Freedom 250 events tied to the nation’s 250th birthday. A concert series had been scheduled to begin June 25 on the National Mall, but multiple artists withdrew after being announced as performers. Some cited concerns that the celebration had become politicized.
Among the performers who backed out were country singer Martina McBride and Bret Michaels, the frontman of the 1980s rock band Poison.
The remaining musical lineup, which included Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory, drew widespread sarcastic commentary on social media.
Trump had previously floated the idea of holding a rally connected to his Make America Great Again movement, though his Thursday announcement did not use the MAGA label. Instead, he framed the event as a national celebration of America’s 250-year history.
The president has sought to shape the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations with several high-profile events. Among them is a mixed martial arts fight planned for June 14, Trump’s 80th birthday, in a specially constructed arena on the White House lawn.
The June 24 rally now becomes one of the central events in Trump’s revised celebration schedule, replacing the planned concert format with a rally-style program built around military music, patriotic performances and the president’s address.
