I just love a good reunion episode
“GIVE US A MOMENT” is peak Invincible. There is a perfect, delicate balance of emotional beats and action, reminiscent of season one. And in this episode, things begin to come full circle from that finale through Nolan. His return to Earth shakes up everyone, from Mark, Debbie, and Oliver, of course, but even for Nolan himself. While this season has been about atonement for him, this episode exhibits that that route is a longer journey than anyone expects.
Sandra Oh can receive the Emmy now, as far as I am concerned. You can feel every single word she says to Nolan through her delivery. And the creative choice to have no score in the background allows the audience to focus entirely on Debbie and Nolan. Oh’s performance in this episode emphasizes just how important voice acting is, and how it can truly make or break a scene in animated shows, especially. J.K. Simmons deserves his flowers, too, for that scene with Debbie, but for his reunion scene with Art as well. He really nails the awkwardness of apologizing and trying to recreate old times. While Nolan still has a long road ahead, you can’t help but feel bad for him. But you feel even worse watching the aftereffects of his actions still impacting the people closest to him.
Everything seems fine for the first few days on the trip back to Talescria. Then, out of nowhere, Conquest and some other Viltrumite goons show up to attack the ship. There has never been a time when Invincible has held back with its violence. So, it makes it difficult to even comprehend how the violence could be turned up another notch. But somehow, they did. As Conquest and Mark fight on a side planet, the tension, shock, and brutality continue to rise and never fall as the episode ends. Steven Yeun’s voice acting, as Mark quite literally gets his guts ripped out for a minute straight, is a 5-star performance. At the cusp of the Viltrumite war, I am extremely excited to see the action sequences that are in store.
This episode was, once again, amazing. It is similar to its first season in all of the best ways, such as the voice acting, emotional moments, and stellar animation. Will Invincible be able to top this episode? We will find out in the coming weeks.
