An American soldier and a British soldier have died during a military training exercise in Iraq, U.S. and U.K. officials confirmed on Monday.
The fatalities occurred on Sunday at an air base in Irbil, located in Iraq’s semi autonomous Kurdish region. Authorities from both countries have released few details about the incident, saying investigations are ongoing.
In a statement posted on social media, the U.S. Army confirmed the death of an American service member during the exercise. Officials said the soldier’s identity would remain confidential until at least 24 hours after family members have been notified.
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence also announced the death of a British soldier involved in the exercise. British officials said the soldier’s family has been informed and requested privacy and a period of grace before further information is made public.
The incident comes as the United States continues to adjust its military presence in Iraq. In recent years, Washington has reduced troop numbers involved in operations against the Islamic State group. However, U.S. forces have maintained a presence in the Kurdish region, where security cooperation with Kurdish authorities remains a key component of American policy.
The deaths occurred in Irbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, where the United States has sought to strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties. In December, Washington inaugurated a large new consulate compound in the city, underscoring its long-term engagement in the region.
The latest tragedy follows another recent loss for the U.S. military. Nearly a month ago, two American soldiers died after falling from a cliff during an off-duty recreational hike in Morocco. The soldiers had been participating in African Lion, an annual multinational military exercise, and were reported missing on May 2 before their deaths were confirmed.
Military officials from both nations have expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
