After years of hoping for the chance to bring home a military dog who left a lasting impression on him, Senior Airman Alex Jones is finally getting that opportunity.
On May 22, 2026, Jones was reunited with Max, a retired military working dog he first met while stationed in South Korea in 2020. The long-awaited reunion took place during a special ceremony in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, organized by Paws of War, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both the airman and the dog he never forgot.

According to a press release from Paws of War, Jones and Max were never officially assigned to work together. Even so, the pair formed a strong bond during Jones' deployment.
“When Senior Airman Alex Jones was stationed in Korea in 2020, he met a dog named Max who captured his heart and attention,” the organization said in the release.

Over the years that followed, Jones continued to think about Max and hoped that one day he would be able to adopt him after his military service came to an end. While Max continued carrying out his duties, Jones stayed in touch, checking on the dog every few months and waiting for an opportunity that was never guaranteed.
Jones had long hoped to adopt Max when the military working dog retired. When he learned that Max would soon be available for adoption, he reached out to Paws of War for help making the reunion possible.
That long-awaited opportunity finally arrived when Max became eligible for retirement.
“You always remember the good dogs,” Jones said in the release.
“Max is one of those good dogs that you never forget. He taught me so much and had such a great presence. I am honored and so happy that he will get to spend his retirement years living with me. I look forward to giving him the relaxing and rewarding retirement that he deserves.”

For years, Max served alongside military personnel in a role that required discipline, courage and extensive training. Military working dogs play a critical role in protecting service members and supporting missions around the world. They are trained to detect explosives and narcotics, provide security in high-risk situations and help keep military installations safe.
Their contributions often go unnoticed by the public, but organizations such as Paws of War work to ensure these animals receive recognition and care when their service comes to an end.
During the reunion ceremony, Max was honored with Paws of War’s Hero with a Heart Award in recognition of his years of dedication and service.

“As Paws of War presents Max with the Hero with a Heart Award, the long-awaited moment will mark not just the end of Max’s service, but the beginning of a well-earned life together,” the organization said.
“This is a fantastic and positive story that we are so happy to be a part of,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “Our military members and working dogs do so much for us all, so it’s wonderful that we can give back and help these two reunite and live out the rest of their lives together.”
For Jones and Max, the ceremony was more than a celebration of a military career. It was the fulfillment of a hope that endured for years — a chance for a loyal working dog to spend retirement with someone who never stopped thinking about him.
After years of service to his country, Max now has something every veteran deserves: a place to call home and a familiar friend waiting for him at the end of the journey.
