President Donald Trump said Saturday that he is considering holding an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” in Washington, D.C., after several performers withdrew from next month’s Freedom 250 celebration on the National Mall.
Trump raised the possibility in a Truth Social post, saying he could take the place of artists who recently backed out of the scheduled event.
“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday,” Trump wrote. “I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World … DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech.”
Trump said he had directed representatives to review whether a rally could be held at the same time and location as the planned celebration.
“Only Great Patriots invited — It will be a Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America!” Trump wrote.
His comments followed a series of withdrawals from Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair, a multiday celebration scheduled in Washington as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary events.
Organizers announced an initial entertainment lineup this week that included Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day & The Time, The Commodores, Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida. Within days, several artists said they would no longer participate.
Some performers said they had understood the event to be a nonpartisan celebration before later expressing concern about its political associations. Michaels cited threats directed at fans and crew members, while others said they did not want to be part of an event that had become politically charged.
Freedom 250 has described itself as a nonpartisan organization created to help coordinate programming connected to America’s semiquincentennial. The Great American State Fair is scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10 and is expected to include concerts, state exhibits, military tributes and other patriotic events.
Organizers have said the celebration is intended to feature all 50 states and U.S. territories.
Several performers remain listed with the event, including Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida. Additional programming and performers could still be announced before the fair begins.
Trump used his post to say the country has improved during his presidency and suggested that a rally featuring him could draw more attention than the original entertainment lineup.
“Two years ago, the United States was DEAD,” Trump wrote. “Now we have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World.”
