Sometimes, heroes don't wear capes—they happen to be your 85-year-old neighbor. In a beautiful display of extreme bravery and quick thinking, an elderly resident in rural Medford, Oregon, is being rightfully celebrated for saving a young woman's life.
A Terrifying Morning Turned Triumphant
On the morning of May 8, a 25-year-old woman was simply doing her job as a caregiver at a mobile home park located in the 3900 block of South Stage Road. Unbeknownst to her, a 42-year-old transient named Matthew Hokulii Aranda had been waiting for hours, allegedly posing as a utility worker. Aranda suddenly attacked the young caregiver, using a taser to incapacitate her.
Hearing her terrified screams, an 85-year-old resident immediately rushed to the scene. Refusing to back down, the brave Good Samaritan confronted the armed suspect directly. Though Aranda turned his weapon on the elderly hero and tased him, this incredibly selfless act bought the young woman the precious time she needed to escape the attack.
A Safe Escape and Swift Justice
As the suspect chased the victim with a large hunting knife, she successfully made it to the safety of her vehicle. In a desperate final attempt to stop her, Aranda jumped onto the hood of her car, but she bravely drove away, causing the suspect to fall off and injure himself in the process.
Law enforcement later located the injured suspect attempting to hide in a nearby bush, where he was arrested without further incident. The successful apprehension was a fantastic collaborative effort, with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) receiving vital assistance from the Oregon State Police, the Medford Police Department, and the Jacksonville Oregon Police Department.

On May 14, a Jackson County grand jury officially indicted Aranda on 10 serious charges, ensuring the community remains safe.
This harrowing event could have ended in a terrible tragedy, but thanks to the incredible courage of an 85-year-old neighbor who refused to look the other way, a young woman is safe today. It is a powerful, uplifting reminder of the fierce, everyday protectors living right within our own communities!
