President Donald Trump congratulated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on winning the Republican Senate runoff in Texas, while also offering praise for defeated incumbent Sen. John Cornyn after one of the state’s most closely watched GOP contests.

In a Wednesday morning Truth Social post, Trump described Paxton’s victory as a major win and said Cornyn had run a strong campaign while building a significant career in public office.

“Congratulations to Ken Paxton on such a tremendous win, and to John Cornyn for having run a strong and powerful race but, more importantly, having had a truly great career,” Trump wrote.

Trump, who endorsed Paxton in the race, said Cornyn would remain a personal friend despite the hard-fought primary battle.

Cornyn “will remain my friend for a long time to come, as we both watch Ken become a fantastic, common sense Senator, one who is respected by all,” Trump wrote.

Paxton secured the Republican nomination after defeating Cornyn in a runoff that exposed divisions inside the Texas Republican Party and drew national attention because of Trump’s involvement. The attorney general will now face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the general election.

Talarico, a pastor and legislator, has drawn attention for a campaign message centered on populism and unity. If elected, he would become the first Democrat to win statewide office in Texas in more than 30 years.

Trump used part of his post to attack Talarico, comparing him to the “Mad Magazine” character Alfred E. Neuman.

“His opponent, Alfred E. Neuman, may be the worst TEXAS candidate I have ever seen,” Trump wrote.

The president accused Talarico of supporting open borders, being weak on crime, opposing the military and backing liberal social policies. Trump also criticized Talarico for being vegan and for previously supporting mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump also mentioned Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, calling her a “very low IQ individual” while claiming she “would have been a far better choice for the Dumocrats.”

The president said he plans to campaign for Paxton as the race moves toward November.

“I will do some nice, big, beautiful rallies for Ken,” Trump wrote. “Texas, this will be FUN.”

Paxton’s victory gives Republicans a Trump-backed nominee in the race to hold the Senate seat, while Democrats turn to Talarico in an effort to break a decadeslong losing streak in statewide Texas elections.
