President Donald Trump marked Memorial Day on Monday with a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring American service members who died in defense of the nation.
Trump stood before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the traditional observance at the military cemetery overlooking Washington, D.C. He was joined by Vice President JD Vance and War Secretary Pete Hegseth as members of the Armed Forces stood at attention during the solemn tribute.
The president placed a wreath at the marble tomb, then paused in silence as veterans, Gold Star families and supporters gathered for the ceremony. A military bugler played taps, continuing one of the nation’s most recognizable Memorial Day traditions.
The ceremony honored generations of American troops who gave their lives in war and military service. Arlington National Cemetery, one of the country’s most revered military burial grounds, is the final resting place for more than 400,000 service members, veterans and family members.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier commemorates unidentified American troops killed in war. The site has been continuously guarded since 1937 and remains a national symbol of sacrifice, remembrance and military duty.
Earlier Monday, Trump issued a Memorial Day message praising U.S. service members and describing what he called a renewed period of American strength. In the message, he also criticized political opponents, extending Memorial Day wishes “even to the Radical Left Democrats” while saying the country is making a comeback under his leadership.
The Arlington ceremony served as the centerpiece of Trump’s Memorial Day observance, placing the focus on the fallen troops whose sacrifices are honored each year on the national holiday.
