US Secretary of State Marco Rubio started his four-day India tour with a visit to the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata on Saturday.
Rubio arrived in Kolkata early in the morning and was received at the airport by US Ambassador Sergio Gor along with senior officials. Soon after his arrival, he visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious congregation founded by Mother Teresa in 1950.
The Mother House, located in central Kolkata, is considered one of the city’s most significant spiritual landmarks. It serves as the international headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity and also houses the tomb of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, where visitors from around the world come to pay tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize-winning nun known for her lifelong service to the poor and sick.
During the visit, Rubio spent time inside the convent, interacted briefly with members of the congregation, and offered prayers at Mother Teresa’s tomb. Officials said the visit was meant to recognize the humanitarian contributions of the organization, which continues to operate homes, schools, and healthcare centers across several countries.
Rubio’s India visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, including discussions on trade, regional security, technology cooperation, and Indo-Pacific partnerships with Indian leaders in New Delhi later this week.
