LEOMINSTER — On Friday morning Leominster Police received an anonymous tip about an unspecified threat to the high school. The decision was made to put the school in a “hold,” where classes continue but they keep hall traffic to a minimum. No threat was reportedly found and the lockdown was lifted after about two hours.
Leominster Police were on site to keep the school secure and investigating the tip.
Leominster Police posted a notice saying “This morning, our department received an anonymous tip regarding a potential threat against the high school. School administrators made the decision to place the school on HOLD status out of an abundance of caution. There will be an increased police presence at the school while the matter is thoroughly investigated. We appreciate the cooperation and patience of our school community as we work to ensure everyone’s safety.”
A student said they were not informed what the nature of the threat was, but that they were able to resume normal school activities.
Comments online ranged from people saying school should have been canceled for the day or students should have been sent home, to general expressions of concerns about a threat here in Leominster and the nature of threats against schools these days, with many being essentially social media talk and others resulting in actual attacks against schools.
One comment on a local Facebook page said, “They should have told parents before school they were planning to put it on a hold and given us the choice whether we bring it drop off the kids later.”
One said, “They did notify the parents. An email went out.”
Another said, “Stay safe this is ridiculous for these children and teachers! It’s supposed to be a happy place to learn and we are wrapping up a school year … please idiots stop. Thank you!”
Leominster Police said they are investigating the incident.
