European Nation Seeks Global Support to Build Competitive Cricket Future

Portugal Cricket has officially launched its ambitious “Road to the World Cup” campaign, outlining a bold vision to transform the country into a competitive and sustainable cricketing nation capable of qualifying for future ICC global events.

Currently ranked 43rd in the ICC Men’s T20 International rankings, Portugal has quietly emerged as one of Europe’s fastest-growing cricket nations, driven not by financial strength but by the dedication and sacrifices of its players and management.

According to the campaign, members of Portugal’s national squad regularly sacrifice holidays, family time, and personal finances simply for the opportunity to represent the country.

“They don’t play for contracts. They play for Portugal,” the campaign states, highlighting the passion and commitment behind the team’s rapid growth.

Ambitious Vision for 2026

Under the leadership of Head Coach Ayzaz Hussain, Portugal Cricket has unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at strengthening both performance and long-term sustainability.

The federation plans to:

  • Play a minimum of 18 T20 Internationals in 2026
  • Improve Portugal’s ICC ranking from 43rd to within the top 35
  • Expand and professionalise women’s cricket
  • Launch a national Under-19 development program
  • Compete strongly in the 2026 ICC World Cup Qualifiers

Officials believe Portugal is now closer than ever to making history on the international stage.

Financial Challenges Remain

Despite impressive progress, Portugal Cricket admits that financial stability remains one of its biggest challenges.

The national squad consists of players based across Portugal, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Bringing the team together for training camps and international tournaments involves significant travel and logistical costs.

Funds raised through the campaign will help cover:

  • International travel expenses
  • Accommodation and meals during tours
  • Training camps and infrastructure development
  • Local transport and logistics
  • Women’s and youth cricket programs

The campaign emphasizes that every contribution, regardless of size, directly supports Portugal’s efforts to compete at international level.

Women’s Cricket Creates History

Portugal Women’s Cricket has also enjoyed a historic breakthrough in recent years.

Led by former England Test and ODI cricketer Sarah Foo-Ryland, Portugal Women made headlines in 2025 after winning their debut T20I series 2-1 against a higher-ranked Norway side.

The federation now aims to organize at least five additional women’s T20 Internationals in 2026, which would make Portugal eligible for ICC development funding.

Santarém Set to Become Cricket Hub

Portugal Cricket also plans to invest in the development of training and touring facilities in Santarém, which is being envisioned as a future European cricket hub.

Additional investments will also support the launch of a new digital platform in partnership with CricHeroes, aimed at strengthening domestic cricket structures and improving player development systems within Portugal.

Sponsorship Opportunities Open

The campaign has also opened the door for corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

Current kit sponsor GRIZZLY has already provided 50 kits for the 2026 season, while Portugal Cricket is now seeking additional partners to support its international ambitions.

Sponsors are expected to receive exposure through:

  • International tournaments in Portugal, Finland, and Austria
  • Matches against leading European cricket nations
  • Coverage through the European Cricket Network’s large YouTube audience
  • Social media and digital promotions

Building Cricket Through Passion

Portugal Cricket’s campaign strongly emphasizes that its journey is being built through belief, sacrifice, and community support rather than major commercial backing.

“This isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s the foundation of Portugal Cricket’s future,” the campaign declares.

With growing international recognition, strong grassroots ambition, and increasing support from players across the Portuguese diaspora — including talented cricketers of Goan origin — Portugal Cricket now hopes to take the next major step toward the ICC World Cup stage.
