Artificial intelligence researcher Andrej Karpathy, one of the founding members of OpenAI and a former senior executive at Tesla, has joined AI company Anthropic, marking a major addition to the rapidly intensifying race among firms developing advanced large language models.
Karpathy announced the move on Tuesday in a post on X, saying he was eager to return to cutting-edge research and development at a time he described as especially important for the future of artificial intelligence.
“I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative,” Karpathy wrote, referring to large language models, the technology behind systems such as chatbots and generative AI assistants. “I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”
Anthropic later confirmed that Karpathy has joined its pretraining division, the group responsible for the large-scale model training processes that shape the capabilities and foundational knowledge of the company’s Claude AI systems. He began work this week and will operate under Nick Joseph, Anthropic’s head of pretraining.
The hiring is widely viewed as a significant win for Anthropic as competition accelerates between leading AI developers seeking dominance in the next generation of generative AI technology. Companies including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta have been aggressively investing in talent, computing infrastructure and research as the industry races to build increasingly sophisticated AI systems for enterprise and consumer use.
Karpathy is considered one of the most influential figures in the modern AI field. After studying under renowned Stanford computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, he became one of OpenAI’s earliest researchers and helped shape the organization during its formative years before later joining Tesla.
At Tesla, Karpathy played a critical role in advancing the company’s artificial intelligence and autonomous driving programs. As head of AI at the electric vehicle maker, he oversaw computer vision and neural network initiatives central to Tesla’s self-driving technology ambitions. His work contributed significantly to Tesla’s efforts to build AI systems capable of interpreting road conditions and navigating complex driving environments.
He departed Tesla in 2022 after several years leading its AI development initiatives, later focusing on independent projects and educational work within the AI community.
In 2024, Karpathy announced the creation of Eureka Labs, an education-focused platform aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into learning experiences. The project reflected his growing interest in AI-powered education and accessible teaching tools.
Despite joining Anthropic, Karpathy said he still intends to continue his education-related efforts in the future.
“I remain deeply passionate about education and plan to resume my work on it in time,” he wrote in his social media announcement.
His arrival at Anthropic further strengthens a company already viewed as one of OpenAI’s strongest competitors in the rapidly evolving AI industry. Founded by former OpenAI researchers and executives, Anthropic has attracted major investment and has emerged as a leading developer of frontier AI models through its Claude family of systems.
The company has positioned itself as a strong advocate for AI safety and responsible development while simultaneously competing aggressively to improve model performance and commercial adoption.
Anthropic’s latest recruitment also highlights the growing movement of senior AI researchers between leading technology firms. Over the past two years, several prominent figures associated with OpenAI have departed to pursue new ventures or join rival organizations.
Among them was OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, who joined Anthropic in 2024. Other notable departures from OpenAI included former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and former chief technology officer Mira Murati, both of whom became involved in separate AI ventures after leaving the company.
The movement of elite AI researchers has become increasingly important as companies compete not only for market share but also for access to the highly specialized expertise needed to develop next-generation models.
Industry analysts say Karpathy’s technical background and experience with large-scale neural network training could play a major role in helping Anthropic improve the capabilities and efficiency of its future AI systems.
Anthropic and OpenAI are currently competing to secure partnerships with major cloud providers and enterprise customers seeking advanced generative AI tools for productivity, automation and software development. The battle for leadership in the sector has intensified as businesses and governments pour billions of dollars into AI infrastructure and applications.
While OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains one of the most widely recognized AI products globally, Anthropic’s Claude models have steadily gained traction among corporate clients and developers seeking alternatives focused on reliability, safety and advanced reasoning abilities.
Karpathy’s decision to join Anthropic is expected to further increase attention on the company as it seeks to strengthen its position in one of the most competitive and fast-moving sectors in technology history.
