“The lies the presumptive Maine Democratic Senate nominee tells about his life keep catching up with him.”

Military vet Graham Platner is facing more questions about his background from both liberal and conservative media precincts.

The Democrat best-known perhaps for his Nazi-style torso tattoo is incumbent GOP U.S. Senator Susan Collins’ likely rival in the November 2026 election.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter ,former Trump administration official Theo Wold has crowned Platner, a self-described working-class Mainer, as “easily the fakest” of the left-wing fake populists.

Of all the fake populists that exist on the left, Graham Platner is easily the fakest. His grandfather was a famous architect who designed the roof of the Ford Foundation. He's a rich kid who went to the Hotchkiss School. He spent his 30s on Reddit talking about how he's a… https://t.co/AmhPpXk3RR

With that in mind, inconsistencies in the candidate’s backstory purportedly include the following:

  • Platner has tried to explain away the Nazi tattoo by claiming that he was unaware of its abhorrent symbolism or connotations, but last fall, even CNN, as well as a former official with his campaign, suggested otherwise.
  • His Maine home was purchased with a $200,000 loan from his “Ivy-League educated father, a prominent attorney and Democratic donor” rather than – as the far-left New Yorker magazine had initially claimed — via a low-interest VA mortgage.
  • Although there is some nuance to the comment, Platner has accused Sen. Collins of voting to send him to Iraq in 2002. He joined the Marines in 2004, about two years after Congress, including Collins, green-lit military action in that country.
  • In a deleted 2014 Reddit post, Platner reportedly praised the tactics of Hamas terrorists.
  • His oyster farm supposedly (and conveniently) does most of its business with his mother’s restaurant.

In the aforementioned CNN article that author Andrew Kaczynski highlighted on X last week in the context of a recent New York Times interview, the latter also reported the following:

“Scrutiny on Platner, a political novice, increased earlier this month after KFile revealed that he’d used the deleted Reddit account to call himself a ‘communist,’ dismiss ‘all’ police as bastards, and to say rural White Americans ‘actually are’ racist and stupid, among other inflammatory remarks. Platner disavowed the posts and said they came at a time in his life when he was angry.”

Reacting to the Times interview, liberal journalist Michael Isikoff rebuked the Platner narrative on X:

“This @nytimes story by @LuluGNavarro on progressive fav Graham Platner–he of the Nazi tattoo who presents himself as a working class oysterman–casts him as something of a fraud: a ‘prep school kid’ who went to tony private school and whose wealthy father financed his house and paid for him and his wife to fly to Norway for expensive fertility treatments.”

The latest development in the saga revolves around Platner’s status as 100-percent disabled veteran, Alana Goodman of the Washington Free Beacon reported today:

“…he has refused to disclose whether the Veterans Affairs (V.A.) benefits that make up the vast majority of his income come with work restrictions—a critical distinction that could have legal implications for his campaign…

“Such a designation is significant because those who receive benefits under [Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability] are generally barred from working a job that provides income above the federal poverty level of $15,960 annually. Platner does not draw a salary from his oyster farm or from his campaign, according to his personal financial disclosure. But his wife, Amy Gertner, draws a salary from both entities, the disclosure indicates, raising questions about whether Platner is paying his wife rather than drawing a salary himself to avoid scrutiny from the V.A….

The Beacon added that “it’s also unclear exactly what Gertner does for Platner’s oyster farm, a small operation that counts as its top customer a restaurant owned by Platner’s mother…”

Legal Insurrection writer Stacy Matthews has opined that “Here we are in 2026, and the lies Graham Platner, the presumptive Maine Democratic Senate nominee, tells about his life keep catching up with him… keep in mind that what we’ve learned so far is only the tip of the iceberg.”

There is a lot to unpack here, but Maine voters, as well as anyone interested in politics, can review the source material and draw their own conclusions about Graham Platner’s bio.

Matthews added that “what remains to be seen is how these stories play out with the state’s independent voters, some of whom he’ll have to win over if he expects to defeat Collins.”

Sen. Collins, who is seeking her sixth term, obviously has RINO tendencies, particularly given Maine’s purple electorate. Her voting record generally reflects that reality.

Remember, however, that Sen. Collins is probably responsible for putting Trump nominee Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. Her highly influential speech in Kavanaugh’s favor arguably was reassuring to her skittish GOP senator colleagues when then-Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation came up for a vote.

It might have been more politically expedient for Collins to vote no after unfounded allegations surfaced against the jurist.

Parenthetically, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a potential presidential or VP candidate, is another Democrat who has apparently tried to obfuscate his privileged background as well as exaggerate his resume.
