Dr. Marty Makary is resigning as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration after approximately 13 months leading the agency, according to a Tuesday report citing an unnamed administration official.
Makary’s departure reportedly came at the request of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to the report. Kyle Diamantas is expected to take over leadership of the FDA in an acting capacity following Makary’s resignation.
Makary’s tenure at the agency was marked by repeated political and regulatory disputes involving abortion medication policy, electronic cigarette approvals, and broader disagreements surrounding the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” health initiative.
The FDA faced sustained scrutiny during Makary’s leadership over its handling of pharmaceutical oversight, tobacco regulation, and public health priorities as the administration pushed for sweeping changes across federal health agencies under Kennedy’s direction.
Makary, a physician and former public health commentator, assumed leadership of the FDA during a period of heightened political attention surrounding the agency’s authority over drug approvals, vaccine policy, and consumer health regulation.
Neither the White House nor the Department of Health and Human Services immediately issued a formal public statement regarding the resignation report.
