German Shepherd Abandoned With His Toys Outside Walmart Was Facing Euthanasia — Now He Has a Second Chance

A German shepherd abandoned outside a California Walmart with nothing but his toys and bags of food beside him has finally been given a second chance at life after his heartbreaking story touched thousands online.

The dog, now named Maverick, was discovered tied up outside a Walmart in Hesperia, California, where he remained for days as shoppers passed by. A viral video shared on Instagram by Leanna Ayala of pet photography studio Bark N Walk captured the painful scene: the gentle German shepherd sitting quietly next to a box filled with his toys.

According to the post, store employees witnessed someone abandoning the dog there with “a box of toys and a bunch of food.”

For three long days, Maverick stayed outside the store waiting.

“He waited for 3 days before animal control showed up,” read the on-screen caption in the viral clip. The video added that the dog “was calm, sweet, and docile when he was on the street.”

The emotional video quickly spread online, touching animal lovers across social media. Many were heartbroken by the sight of the dog sitting quietly beside the only belongings left behind with him.

Ayala, who shared the video, said Maverick’s gentle behavior stood out immediately.

“He was clearly ‘not a vicious monster,’” she wrote in the caption, referring to common misconceptions surrounding German shepherds.

As the video continued gaining attention, many viewers wondered why someone would leave such a calm and loving dog behind. Ayala offered a compassionate perspective.

“Perhaps it was their only choice because [German shepherds] get euthanized so fast at our shelters, and they feared this would happen to him,” she wrote.

The story hit especially close to home for Ayala, who revealed that her own German shepherd, Papa, had once been abandoned in a similar way.

“My [German shepherd] Papa was abandoned the same way, and he is the best dog I’ve ever had. I can’t help but feel the same way about this guy,” the caption continued. “He deserves a second chance.”

Eventually, animal control picked Maverick up and transported him to the Hesperia Animal Shelter. But even there, his future remained uncertain. Though shelter workers reportedly described him as friendly and gentle, the frightened dog soon found himself at risk of euthanasia.

“Maverick’s temperament early on was very docile and gentle,” Ayala told People. “Once he went to the shelter, he was so scared, they had to keep him in quarantine, which ultimately landed him on the euthanasia list.”

Ayala explained that heartbreaking situations like Maverick’s are sadly common in California’s High Desert region.

“There are strays everywhere and most recently, puppies,” she told People.

Determined not to let Maverick’s story end in tragedy, Ayala began working with local rescue groups while supporters rallied online to help save him. A GoFundMe was organized, and animal lovers across the internet donated and shared his story in hopes of finding him a safe place to go.

Then came the breakthrough everyone had hoped for.

In an update shared online and with People, Ayala announced that Maverick had found a foster-to-adopt family in Washington. Rescue organizations, transport volunteers and compassionate supporters all came together to help give the abandoned dog a fresh start.

“He leaves the shelter May 5!! Thank you to everyone that donated. This is all possible thanks to you!!” Ayala wrote in an emotional update.

On May 5, Ayala shared another video showing Maverick finally leaving the shelter and beginning his journey to his new life in Washington. In the caption, she thanked Chiko’s Pawz On Wheelz, Iron Paw Rescue and the many volunteers who helped transport him to safety.

“What a rollercoaster, am I right?! From abandoned at Walmart with all his toys, to a new life in WA,” Ayala wrote.

Today, the once-abandoned German shepherd who waited alone outside a Walmart is no longer fighting for survival. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, Maverick now has something far greater than the toys left beside him that day — he has hope, safety and the chance to finally be loved again.
