Passengers aboard a Turkish Airlines flight were evacuated after a fire broke out during landing, triggering panic among passengers, crew members, and ground staff at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

The incident occurred early Monday morning when Turkish Airlines flight TK 726, an Airbus A330, was landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal. A fire reportedly broke out in the aircraft’s right main landing gear after a tyre burst during touchdown. The aircraft was carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members, including several United Nations officials.

The flight had arrived from Istanbul and reported a fire in its right landing gear immediately after landing.

All passengers were safely evacuated, although a few sustained minor injuries during the rush to exit the aircraft.

The fire forced Tribhuvan International Airport to temporarily suspend all domestic and international flight operations. The airport remained closed for 98 minutes. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by a hard landing, tyre pressure issues, or another technical malfunction. An investigation is currently underway.

This is not the first time Turkish Airlines has experienced an incident at Kathmandu airport. In 2015, another flight with the same call sign, TK 726, skidded off the runway in dense fog, although no injuries were reported at the time.
