James Harden answered critics in dramatic fashion Saturday night, knocking down a series of clutch shots late in the fourth quarter to help the Cleveland Cavaliers defeat the Detroit Pistons 116-109 and cut Detroit’s lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series to 2-1.

In a game packed with momentum swings, playoff intensity and standout individual performances, it was Harden’s calm execution in the closing minutes that ultimately swung the outcome in Cleveland’s favor after the veteran guard had faced heavy scrutiny following turnover-filled performances in the first two games of the series.

The 17-year NBA veteran finished with 19 points, but his biggest contributions came when the game hung in the balance during the final two minutes.

Meanwhile, Donovan Mitchell once again led Cleveland offensively, scoring 35 points and delivering several key baskets and free throws down the stretch as the Cavaliers protected their home court and avoided falling into a dangerous 3-0 deficit.

Jarrett Allen added 18 points for Cleveland, which remained unbeaten at home during the postseason and will now attempt to even the series in Game 4 on Monday night.

For Detroit, Cade Cunningham produced another spectacular postseason performance despite the loss. The young star recorded the second playoff triple-double of his career with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, continuing his emergence as one of the league’s rising franchise players.

But Cunningham’s otherwise brilliant night was overshadowed somewhat by eight costly turnovers, several of which came during crucial stretches late in the game when Detroit had opportunities to seize control.

Tobias Harris contributed 21 points for the Pistons, while Duncan Robinson hit a crucial three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter that briefly tied the contest and energized Detroit.

The game remained tightly contested throughout much of the second half, with neither team able to create significant separation. Robinson’s three-pointer with 3:14 remaining tied the score at 104-104 and appeared to shift momentum toward the Pistons.

But Cleveland responded immediately with one of the game’s defining defensive plays.

After Detroit attempted to inbound the ball, Cavaliers forward Max Strus intercepted Cunningham’s pass near midcourt and raced in for an uncontested breakaway layup, putting Cleveland back in front and igniting the home crowd.

From there, Harden took over.

The veteran guard, who had been heavily criticized after committing late-game mistakes earlier in the series, calmly delivered one clutch basket after another to silence doubters and steady Cleveland’s offense under pressure.

First, Harden hit a 16-foot step-back jumper to extend the Cavaliers’ lead to four points. Cunningham answered with an aggressive driving dunk to keep Detroit within striking distance, but Harden quickly responded again with a soft floating seven-footer in traffic to restore Cleveland’s cushion.

Detroit refused to fade quietly. Cunningham buried a deep three-pointer to trim the lead once more and keep the Pistons alive in the final minute.

But Harden delivered the knockout blow moments later.

With 25 seconds remaining and Tobias Harris defending closely, Harden created space with one of his trademark step-back moves and drilled a three-pointer that pushed Cleveland’s advantage to 113-109, effectively sealing the victory.

The arena erupted as Harden backpedaled toward the defensive end after the shot, visibly energized after enduring days of criticism over his late-game struggles.

Detroit still had one final opportunity following a timeout, but Robinson’s contested three-point attempt fell short. Mitchell then calmly converted free throws in the closing seconds to secure the Cavaliers’ win.

Beyond the immediate importance of the result, Mitchell also achieved a major personal milestone during the game.

The Cavaliers star surpassed 2,000 career postseason points in just his 73rd playoff appearance, making him tied for the third-fastest active player to reach the mark and ninth-fastest in NBA history.

Mitchell has consistently elevated his play during the postseason throughout his career, and Saturday’s performance once again highlighted his importance to Cleveland’s championship hopes.

For much of the night, the game showcased the contrasting identities of both teams.

Detroit relied heavily on Cunningham’s playmaking and transition offense, using athleticism and aggressive drives to pressure Cleveland’s defense. The Pistons repeatedly forced turnovers and created scoring opportunities through fast breaks and second-chance possessions.

Cleveland, meanwhile, leaned on experience, half-court execution and late-game composure.

That composure ultimately made the difference.

The Cavaliers entered Game 3 facing intense pressure after dropping the opening two games of the series and struggling in several late-game situations. Harden, in particular, had become the focus of criticism after turnovers and missed opportunities in crunch time earlier in the matchup.

Saturday’s performance represented a significant response from one of the NBA’s most accomplished veterans.

Known throughout his career for his offensive creativity and ability to control games late, Harden delivered several signature moments just when Cleveland needed them most.

The victory also reinforced Cleveland’s dominance on its home floor during this year’s playoffs. The Cavaliers improved to 5-0 at home in the postseason and regained momentum heading into Monday’s Game 4, where they will attempt to even the series before it shifts back to Detroit.

For the Pistons, the loss represented a missed opportunity to take complete control of the semifinal matchup despite another outstanding performance from Cunningham.

The young guard has continued to prove he can thrive under postseason pressure, but Detroit’s turnovers and late defensive breakdowns ultimately prevented the team from closing out the game.

Now, with Cleveland suddenly carrying renewed confidence and momentum, the series appears poised to become an even more intense battle as both teams continue their pursuit of a place in the Eastern Conference finals.
