President Donald Trump announced Friday that the federal government has begun releasing declassified files related to unidentified aerial phenomena, including military reports, astronaut transcripts, photos, and videos spanning decades of investigations.

President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration has initiated the first public release of long-classified government records involving unidentified flying objects and unidentified anomalous phenomena through a newly launched federal disclosure portal at WAR.GOV/UFO.
PRESIDENTIAL UNSEALING FOR UAP ENCOUNTERS.
Per President Trump's directive, the @DeptofWar has declassified & released unresolved UAP records. This is an unprecedented level of transparency, no other admin has gone this far.

Trump described the release as part of a broader transparency initiative aimed at making federal records involving extraterrestrial claims, unexplained aerial incidents, and military sightings available to the public.
“As for my promise to you, the Department of War has released the first tranche of the UFO/UAP files to the Public for their review and study,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social statement.
“In an effort for Complete and Maximum Transparency, it was my Honor to direct my Administration to identify and provide Government files related to Alien and Extraterrestrial Life, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, and Unidentified Flying Objects.”
Trump also criticized prior administrations for withholding information tied to UFO investigations.
“Whereas previous Administrations have failed to be transparent on this subject, with these new Documents and Videos, the people can decide for themselves, ‘WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?’” Trump wrote. “Have Fun and Enjoy!”
According to administration officials, the first public release includes 162 declassified files containing documents, photographs, sketches, videos, transcripts, and investigative summaries dating back nearly eight decades.
The Department of War said additional files will continue to be released “on a rolling basis.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the administration was committed to expanded disclosure surrounding government-held UAP information.
“The Department of War is in lockstep with President Trump to bring unprecedented transparency regarding our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” Hegseth said. “These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation — and it’s time the American people see it for themselves.”
Officials said the ongoing disclosure initiative, referred to internally as the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, or PURSUE, will involve records from multiple federal agencies, including NASA, the FBI, the Department of Energy, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
Among the materials highlighted in the initial release are several files connected to NASA’s Apollo-era missions.
One document involves a 1972 Apollo 17 image reportedly showing three objects positioned in triangular formation above the lunar surface. According to descriptions accompanying the release, Pentagon analysts stated there was “no consensus about the nature of the anomaly” and noted it could represent a “physical object.”
Another release references an unexplained flashing object reportedly captured near the Apollo 12 landing site.

The file collection also includes declassified astronaut communications from Apollo 17 in which crew members described observing “jagged, angular fragments” and unidentified objects near the spacecraft during the mission.
Additional materials reportedly include FBI summaries involving military and drone pilot sightings, including a 2023 report describing a linear aerial object containing intense illuminated “bands.”
The administration did not state whether any of the released materials provide evidence confirming extraterrestrial life.
Federal agencies have acknowledged increased investigations into unexplained aerial encounters in recent years, particularly involving military personnel and sensitive defense locations. Congressional hearings on unidentified aerial phenomena have also intensified pressure on intelligence and defense agencies to release additional records.
The Pentagon has repeatedly stated that while many incidents remain unexplained, investigators have not confirmed evidence linking the sightings to extraterrestrial origins.
Rep. Tim Burchett, who has advocated for broader UAP disclosures, said the newly released files represent only an initial portion of the material expected to become public.
Burchett reportedly described the first batch as “a drop in the bucket” compared to future disclosures expected from the administration.
Public reaction to the release varied widely online, with supporters praising the move as a historic transparency effort while others questioned whether the disclosure represented a limited release that excluded more sensitive information.
The release also drew renewed attention to longstanding debates surrounding government secrecy, military intelligence classification practices, and unexplained aerial encounters reported by pilots and defense personnel over multiple decades.
