Contraction is one of the many visible signs of trouble. It indicates an outward excision that usually signals moves to stop the hemorrhaging. Sadly, it is painful to be on the side of the thing that is being removed, cauterized, or shrunk. This seems to be the position Jordan Peele finds himself in with the recent announcement of the decision to downsize Monkey Paw Productions.

While for the most part it is written up as a means to trim the fat, it often has much more dire implications. If not for the industry forecasts, then certainly for the creative who has to deal with that decision on a personal level.

Peele began Monkey Paw Productions six years before signing a deal with Universal. Under that umbrella, he created content that gained a massive following. By 2017, the breadth of Peele’s talent was evident. His gift was making room for him, and that year marked a significant turning point. He signed a deal with Universal Pictures, and his career was indeed in a period of elevation.

“On May 3, 2017, Peele’s signs a two year, first-look deal with Universal Pictures. The deal involves Peele and his Monkeypaw production company to invest, produce and distribute genre films for Universal. The deal also includes Peele producing micro-budget films with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions banner after their collaboration with Get Out.”

This was a moment of momentum. Peele had proven himself, and the industry was paying attention.

 A Name That Seemed Bulletproof

By 2019, things looked glossy for Jordan Peele. He was building a name for himself that seemed bulletproof, earning comparisons to the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, one of the most famous artisans in the suspense and thriller genre. Get Out was the shiny object holding everyone’s attention, and it opened doors that few could have anticipated.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,

“In 2019, Peele signed a rich, five-year deal with Universal, with Monkeypaw becoming one of the bigger-staffed companies of its type in town.”

At that point, expansion was the name of the game. Peele was not just a filmmaker. He was becoming a brand, a force, a creative entity with serious backing.

The Tides Begin to Turn

A decade ago, expansion was the name of the game. Now, it seems the tides have turned. Recent news speaks of contraction, and no one can say the ominous signs weren’t in the air.

It is noted that before this current contraction, Peele had signed another deal with Universal. However, the terms were not quite the same. As The Hollywood Reporter notes,

“Peele reupped in 2024, but his deal was scaled back, according to sources. It didn’t help that the banner’s output wasn’t prolific.”

Whether it seemed that Peele was struggling creatively or whether other concerns posed a blockade to the development of additional content that rivaled or superseded Get Out, something was poised to be a death knell. The handwriting was on the wall.

Reportedly, even the one project of substance that Peele was plugging away on was not only stuck in development but was also dropped entirely from the calendar. This is a surefire sign that the umbrella corporation was changing the size of its umbrella, if not removing it altogether. As The Hollywood Reporter goes on to note,

“In the end, the company was described as too bloated for its current output.”

Restructuring or Lack of Faith?

To keep a positive spin on things, the move is being packaged as a restructuring, a downsizing, a trimming of the fat. However, what serves as the undercurrent is a lack of faith. The failure of Peele to deliver on what Universal had hoped has served to force him into a corner.

The indistinct message is that this allows Peele to take a more intimate approach to creative production. As noted, “The move has been described as a ‘refocusing’ by those in the know.

” Sources also say Peele wants to take a more hands-on involvement in the development of projects.”

But the genuine question remains: did Peele have a choice in the matter? Is it not possible for him to take a hands-on approach without the downsizing of his creative team? This is something that is not addressed. This likely stems from the understanding that it just looks better and less alarming. It also helps to stem the tide of conjecture that could follow.

There is still no word from Peele on how this felt or what it meant for him going forward. Peele certainly has creative potential, or else he would have never earned the comparisons he did. The question now is whether this will be a measure for propulsion or further confinement.

If Peele does rise to the occasion, would that move him to a more independent lane where retraction will never be a thing on the table? At least not if he isn’t the one making the decision. Only time will tell if this moment becomes a launching pad or a ceiling. But one thing is certain: the pressure is on, and the world is watching.
