Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić is sidelined with a Grade 2 hamstring strain at a critical point in the playoffs, leaving a major gap in the team’s lineup as they face the Western Conference’s top seed.

Dončić has not played since suffering the injury on April 2 and has yet to appear in the postseason. His absence has significantly affected the Lakers’ performance after they advanced past the first round.

The No. 4 seed Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the No. 5 seed Houston Rockets in six games, but struggled in their opening matchup against the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder, losing 108–90 in Game 1 on Tuesday.

Dončić Speaks on Frustration From the Sidelines

Speaking to reporters, Dončić expressed frustration at being unable to compete during a crucial stretch of the season.

“It’s very frustrating,” he said. “I don’t think people understand how frustrating it is. All I want to do is play basketball, especially this time. It’s the best time to play basketball.”

He added that watching his teammates compete without him has been difficult, while also praising their effort.

“It’s very frustrating seeing what my team is doing,” Dončić said. “I’m very proud of them. It’s been very tough to just sit and watch them play.”

Recovery Timeline Still Uncertain

Medical guidance suggests that Grade 2 hamstring strains typically require several weeks to months of recovery. Dončić said doctors initially estimated an eight-week recovery period.

“The day I did the MRI on the hamstring, the doctor told me eight weeks at the beginning,” he explained. “I’m doing everything I can in the process, and I think we’re on a good way.”

Based on that timeline, he could still be several weeks away from a potential return, making it unlikely he will feature in much of the remaining playoff series.

Strong Season Cut Short

Before the injury, Dončić was having one of the strongest seasons of his career, averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.6 steals across 64 games.

The Lakers also struggled against Oklahoma City during the regular season, going 0–4 against the Thunder with or without Dončić on the court.

Despite the setback, he emphasized that he is focused on recovery and gradual progress.

“Every day I’m doing stuff I’m supposed to do,” he said. “Obviously recovery, now I’m working. Just going day by day, and I feel better every day.”

Intensive Recovery Program Underway

Dončić has begun light running but has not yet returned to contact drills. His recovery program includes platelet-rich plasma therapy, cold therapy, and hyperbaric chamber sessions.

He also traveled to Spain for treatment, noting that he consulted with Lakers medical staff before proceeding.

“Everybody agreed for me to go there,” he said.

He added that he is being cautious due to past experiences returning from injury too quickly.

“It’s a tough one for me because I came back from injuries before too soon, and it wasn’t the best result,” Dončić said. “You have to be very careful.”

Lakers Moving Forward Without Their Star

While Dončić’s return timeline remains uncertain, he remains confident in his teammates’ ability to continue competing in the series.

“Everybody had us out,” he said. “Everybody had us losing in five, six games, and we proved it. The way everybody stepped up is truly amazing to see. So hopefully they continue that.”
