The French football season is approaching a dramatic conclusion with Paris Saint-Germain on the verge of another Ligue 1 title while fierce battles continue for Champions League qualification and survival at the bottom of the table.
Paris Saint-Germain could officially secure the league championship this weekend if second-placed RC Lens fails to defeat FC Nantes on Friday night. PSG currently holds a six-point advantage over Lens with only three matches remaining in the season, placing the Paris club firmly in control of the title race.
The upcoming showdown between PSG and Lens next Wednesday was originally scheduled for April 11 but was postponed to support PSG’s pursuit of a second consecutive Champions League crown. That decision now adds even more significance to the rescheduled clash, which could potentially become either a title celebration or a final opportunity for Lens to keep the race alive.
PSG enters the decisive stretch filled with confidence after defeating Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday to book another appearance in Europe’s biggest final. The Paris side has balanced domestic dominance with continental ambition throughout the campaign and now stands close to completing another remarkable season under intense pressure.
For Nantes, however, Friday’s match carries a very different meaning. The club sits second from bottom in the Ligue 1 standings and faces automatic relegation to Ligue 2 unless it secures a crucial victory over Lens. The stakes could hardly be higher for a team fighting desperately to preserve its top-flight status.
While PSG appears close to wrapping up the title, the race for Champions League football remains fiercely competitive behind them.
Olympique Lyonnais and Lille OSC are locked in a tense contest for third place, which guarantees direct qualification to next season’s Champions League group stage. Lyon currently occupies third place with a narrow two-point advantage over Lille heading into the weekend.
Lyon travels to face Toulouse FC carrying strong attacking momentum. The club’s offensive unit has become increasingly dangerous in recent weeks with forwards Endrick, Afonso Moreira and Roman Yaremchuk all delivering important performances at a critical stage of the season.
Lille, meanwhile, faces a difficult challenge away to AS Monaco. Monaco has been especially formidable at home this season and still harbors hopes of climbing higher in the table from sixth place. Lille knows that any dropped points could significantly damage its Champions League ambitions with so few matches remaining.
Stade Rennais remains mathematically involved in the battle for third place, though the club’s chances are slim. Rennes must rely on both Lyon and Lille slipping up while continuing to win its own matches.
Rennes hosts Paris FC, which has undergone a remarkable turnaround under coach Antoine Kombouaré. Since his arrival, Paris FC has lost only once in nine league games and successfully distanced itself from relegation danger after spending much of the season struggling near the bottom.
At Olympique de Marseille, tensions continue to grow during what has become a deeply disappointing and chaotic campaign. Marseille travels to face Le Havre AC amid reports of unrest inside the dressing room and growing frustration among players and supporters.
Coach Habib Beye has attempted to reverse the club’s decline by increasing the intensity of training sessions, reportedly doubling the workload in recent weeks. Despite those efforts, Marseille has struggled badly and risks suffering a fifth defeat in seven matches. The club’s hopes of securing third place have effectively disappeared, leaving mounting pressure on both the coaching staff and players.
One of Marseille’s biggest concerns has been the recent dip in form of English forward Mason Greenwood. Greenwood has not scored in Ligue 1 since March 7 and remains stuck on 15 league goals despite starting the season in excellent form. His scoring drought has coincided with Marseille’s broader collapse in performances and confidence.
At the opposite end of the table, the relegation battle remains extremely tight.
AJ Auxerre hosts OGC Nice in a critical encounter involving two teams still fighting for survival. Auxerre currently occupies 16th place, which would force the club into a relegation playoff against a Ligue 2 side. However, a victory over Nice could lift Auxerre into 15th place on goal difference and potentially provide a path to safety.
Nice also remains in danger despite recent improvements. The club’s hopes of avoiding relegation have been boosted by the strong form of striker Elye Wahi, whose goals in recent weeks have helped revive the team’s confidence during the closing stages of the campaign.
Several individual performances are shaping the final weeks of the Ligue 1 season.
Rennes winger Mousa Al-Tamari continues to impress after scoring a spectacular angled volley last weekend. His pace and creativity have become central to Rennes’ attacking play as the club pushes to remain in European contention.
His teammate Esteban Lepaul currently leads the league scoring charts and needs just one more goal to reach 20 for the season. Lepaul’s rise has become one of Ligue 1’s most compelling stories after he was released by Lyon several years ago before rebuilding his career elsewhere.
Injuries and suspensions are also expected to influence key fixtures this weekend.
Lens will travel to Nantes without five important first-team players. Coach Pierre Sage confirmed that attacking wingers Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin are being rested as a precaution.
The club will additionally be without suspended trio Mamadou Sangaré, Saud Abdulhamid and Adrien Thomasson.
PSG continues to manage the absence of star right back Achraf Hakimi, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury as the club carefully monitors his recovery ahead of the Champions League final.
Marseille will also be weakened by injuries to defenders Nayef Aguerd and Hamed Traoré, both of whom are expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Away from on-field action, controversy has emerged involving female supporters of FC Girondins de Bordeaux following allegations of abusive treatment by stadium security staff before a fourth-tier match against Aviron Bayonnais FC last Saturday.
The Ultramarines released a statement on social media claiming several women experienced what they described as humiliating and degrading body searches during security checks before entering the stadium.
“We take these abuses very seriously and will not let them go unpunished,” the supporters group said.
The complaints were also reported to Her Game Too, a campaign group dedicated to protecting women from abuse and discrimination in football stadiums.
As Ligue 1 enters its final weeks, the pressure surrounding the title race, European qualification battle and relegation struggle continues to intensify, ensuring a dramatic finish to the French football season.
