Ambassador Monica Crowley said Wednesday that having President Donald Trump in office during America’s 250th birthday celebration is “a gift,” describing the moment as historic and uniquely significant for the country.
Speaking during an event hosted by Breitbart News, Crowley — who is leading the Freedom 250 semiquincentennial celebration efforts — reflected on what she believes is the extraordinary timing of Trump’s presidency coinciding with one of the biggest milestones in American history.
Crowley explained that Trump himself often jokes about how events unfolded in a way that allowed him to preside over several globally important occasions during his second term in office.
“President Trump often jokes,” she said. “He said, ‘Well, my first term, I brought the FIFA World Cup to America, and I brought the 2028 Olympic Games to America. And I thought, you know, I’m not going to be around to actually see it, because I’ll serve two consecutive terms, and we all know what happened in 2020.’”
According to Crowley, the unexpected political comeback that resulted in Trump serving a rare non-consecutive second term placed him in a historic position to oversee not only the FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, but also the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration marking 250 years of American independence.
“But now, I mean, this is absolutely the hand of God here,” Crowley said. “Because what a gift it is to have President Trump as president right now, in this moment, to celebrate America’s 250th.”
She added that Trump himself jokes about the timing of the historic anniversary.
“And the president jokes, yeah, I tried to take credit for America’s 250th birthday also, but that wasn’t quite working out that way,” Crowley said with a laugh. “But yeah, what a gift to have him as president in this moment.”
Crowley emphasized that the administration intends to make the Freedom 250 celebration one of the largest patriotic events the country has ever seen. She said the White House hopes to create a nationwide and international celebration that highlights America’s history, achievements, and cultural influence across the world.
“We are going to have the most momentous and exciting celebration in American history, because President Trump has promised the American people that,” she said. “That is what our exceptional nation deserves.”
According to Crowley, the administration also wants the celebration to extend beyond America’s borders and become what she described as a “truly global celebration.”
During the discussion, Crowley contrasted what she believes the celebration might have looked like under a different administration, referencing former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Can you imagine if the other side had been in office,” she said, suggesting that the anniversary would likely have received far less attention and enthusiasm.
She joked that there might have simply been a press release issued on the morning of July 4, followed by Harris “out on the beach the rest of the day.”
Crowley said Americans instead can expect an energetic and patriotic nationwide celebration under Trump’s leadership.
She also spoke emotionally about wanting to recreate the patriotic spirit many Americans experienced during the nation’s bicentennial celebration in 1976.
Crowley recalled her own childhood memories from that historic event, describing how deeply patriotic the atmosphere felt even at a young age.
“I remember being at the beach on July 4 that year, holding a sparkler in one hand and a small American flag in the other, waving that flag so proudly,” she said.
“It was this indelible sense of American patriotism and love for my country, even though I was too young to fully understand what that meant,” Crowley added.
The Freedom 250 celebration is expected to include large-scale national events, ceremonies, cultural programs, and international participation as the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary in 2026.
