A Massachusetts State Trooper has died after a wrong-way driver smashed into his cruiser on Route 1 early Wednesday morning.

The wrong-way driver was killed in the crash, according to police.

The trooper was identified as State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor by state officials at a press conference at the Danvers State Police barracks.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic death of a Massachusetts State Police Trooper who died on the line of duty overnight in Lynnfield,” said Gov. Maura Healey in a statement.

“The Trooper was responding to reports of a wrong-way driver and put himself in harm’s way to protect others,” she continued.  “This act of service and courage is what our State Police are called to do every day. They show up ready to face danger so the rest of us can be safe. Today, Massachusetts is mourning one of those heroes. “

State Police said the crash ocurred in the early morning hours on Route 1 in Lynnfield.

“Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2 a.m., a wrong-way driver traveling south in the northbound lanes struck a responding State Police cruiser,” State Police said in a statement.

The responding trooper was taken to a Boston hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, police added.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday with traffic being detoured in the area of Route 1 northbound at Walnut Street in Saugus.

“Drivers should seek alternate routes,” the state Department of Transportation said in a release around 3:45 a.m. “Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. ”

The Town of Lynnfield posted on social media that bus pick up “may be a bit delayed,” urging residents to use their “Bus App to follow” assigned routes

“If you are commuting,” the town stated, “please give yourself plenty of time and avoid Rt 1 Lynnfield when able.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Trooper’s family, loved ones, and with fellow members of the State Police during this incredibly difficult time,” Healey said.

The Boston Police Patrolman’s Association said, “Our hearts are heavy once again.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all impacted by this tragic accident.”
