Law enforcement officials have identified Michael Marx, 45, as the suspect in a shooting that unfolded Monday afternoon on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House, according to reporting by NBC News.

Officials said Marx, who was carrying a Texas driver’s license, was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds as of Tuesday morning. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, the outlet reported.

The incident also left a 15-year-old bystander with a gunshot wound to the leg. Authorities said the injury was not serious.

Witnesses reported hearing at least five gunshots shortly after a motorcade carrying Vice President JD Vance passed through the area, which is typically heavily trafficked.

The shooting occurred while President Donald Trump was speaking at a Small Business Summit inside the White House East Room. As a precaution, members of the press were directed into the briefing room while surrounding areas were placed under lockdown.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, the incident began around 3:30 p.m. near 15th Street Southwest and Independence Avenue. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said plainclothes agents observed what they described as a “suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm” and moved to confront him.

Details surrounding the confrontation and subsequent exchange of gunfire have not been fully released as the investigation remains ongoing.
