Sports brings people together, it’s the creation of a family when all are strangers, and the unity when all are divided. The sense of a newly created community through the love of sports knows no difference and background. Everyone is loved and everyone is accepted. Despite the international changes, sports act as a coping mechanism and an escapism for every exhausted mind and a tired soul.
It’s where people find themselves through others. It’s the community that is built on a shared understanding and experience of what it feels like to win and lose. It’s where love is a shared essence between all. Kids, teenagers, adults, elderlies and even unborn babies. All are loyal fans and members of a huge international family. Among all the chants and songs that have been played and repeated by generations of fans throughout the years of sports history, Liverpool’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” hits different. It’s a sense of belonging when one is lost. It’s the hand that patiently pulls you when home is not a reality anymore. It’s the community and the family that are built on the same foundation.
What’s home and where is it? you might ask. It’s there at Anfield, between the green grass and the red crest is where home is. The place that continues to make history and connect people from all around the world. That’s where we all belong despite and in spite of every loss and tragedy. For the past years, Liverpool Football Club faced their toughest and proudest moments all at once. It’s the loss of loved ones and mates who turned to be family, as much as it’s the celebration of winning the league with the golden lion crest.
From champions that continue to be the beating heart and soul of the club, to the newly formed team of young faces who are rising up to be and meet the club’s standards. Starting with the club’s peak of the golden generation that followed the career of unforgettable legends like lan Callaghan, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Steven Gerrard, and many other names that have impacted the new generation. All the way to the new golden era of players who shaped and continue draw a similar level of professionalism for the club such as Jordan Henderson, Mohammed Salah, Virgil van Djik, Alison Becker, Andrew Robertson, Curtis Jones, Cody Gakpo and the late Diogo Jota.

Each name has its own path and career that struggled among the way and learned from every downfall. But with all the downfalls of life and the loss of loved ones, they remained strong and resilient. On the Third July of 2025, a tragedy have come upon the club and players. Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s left winger and striker lost his young life along with his brother due to a tragic accident. Leaving a newly wedded bride and three little kids, sadness of the loss and the courage to move forward engulfed not only the mourning family, but the players too. Not only did the club lose a striker and a left winger, they lost a brother and a friend. Someone they shared inner jokes with and laughed on the simplest things on the pitch and off it. And to immortalize his memory, the players stood like the family they are, strong and brave they backed up Jota’s family in every aspect of life. A reminder that in Liverpool’s family no one walks alone.

After Jota’s heartbreaking loss, the number 20 has officially retired in LFC across all levels of the team. It’s a memory of a great teammate and a friend who thrived and strived to do more. Not only that, but on the 20th minute of every match played at Anfield, fans stand up and sing for the late Diogo Jota as a living memory. Reality strikes that he is not physically in attendance, but he lives in every’s fan’s memory, heart, and soul.

Fans of the club tear up when the song is played and sung in the stadium. And that continues to raise questions about whether the emotions are real or just an act. But ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is not just a praise for the club, it’s a reminder for every fan and player within the club that regardless of the difficulties and differences, there’s still something to hold onto, and a place to rest and reset when all is heavy. Despite the results of projects and dreams that one worked hard on, and the progress that might be expected and delayed along the way, Anfield is there to remind us that we will never walk alone. For this is a collective life for us all to be in and escape when life is nothing but a heavy and dark burden to live with and accept.
Just remember that no matter what happens, it’s important to keep going and to ..
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Tho’ your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
